In 2014, the U.S. government, in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, put Timchenko on its sanctions list, describing him as a member of Putin's inner circle. REUTERS Gennady Timchenko, a billionaire friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has sold his private jet, according to a broker and aircraft registration data, after complaining that U.S. sanctions made it impossible for him to use the aircraft. If anyone’s looking for further evidence of a strong economy, here’s a sign: Wealthy individuals and companies are starting to snap up used private jets before they get too expensive.Take Steven Myers. A private equity financier and a licensed pilot, Meyers had been patiently looking to buy a jet for years. But when he began noticing a drop in the number of planes for sale a few months ago, he moved quickly to buy a Cessna CJ2. (Meyers wouldn’t say how much he paid, but the 2002 model he bought is listed at about $2.4 million).“On this particular airplane,” said Meyers, who run Los Angeles-based Dolphin Capital Holdings Inc., “I probably would have made a worse deal if I had waited.”The private-jet business collapsed after the 2008 recession as companies scaled back on travel to cut costs. Prices had been driven to astronomical levels in the earlier boom and too many planes were built. When the crash came, pre-owned aircraft lost value at a … [Read more...] about At $9.7 Million a Pop, Private Jets Are Luring Buyers Once Again
(CNN)A prosperity gospel televangelist from Louisiana says Jesus has asked him to buy a new private jet. And wouldn't you know it, Jesus has real nice taste in planes. Jesse Duplantis, leader of Jesse Duplantis Ministries and the owner of three other private jets, is asking his followers to chip in so his ministry can purchase a brand new Dassault Falcon 7X, which runs about $54 million. In a video recently published on his website, Duplantis says the planes get him closer to the Lord -- both literally and figuratively -- and he had a divine conversation in which Jesus asked for the new aircraft by name. "It was one of the greatest statements the Lord ever told me, he said, 'Jesse do you want to come up where I'm at?'" the minister says. "'I want you to bleed me for a Falcon 7X.'" By "bleed," Duplantis -- er, Jesus -- apparently meant "ask for donations." If Jesus was to descend from heaven and physically set foot on 21st century earth, prosperity gospel televangelist Jesse Duplantis told his followers, the Redeemer would probably pass on riding on the back of a donkey: "He'd be on an airplane preaching the Gospel all over the world." And Duplantis believes Jesus wouldn't exactly settle for 30 inches of legroom or getting patted down by TSA. Why would He choose anything less than the Falcon 7X, a private jet that nears the sound barrier but also has noise-limiting acoustic technology, a bluetooth-enabled entertainment center and an optional in-flight shower? Duplantis, saying he needs roughly $54 million to help him efficiently spread the gospel to as many people as possible, has asked the Lord - and hundreds of thousands of hopefully deep-pocketed followers across the world - for just such a plane. He is the latest aircraft-seeking preacher to draw raised eyebrows and outright condemnation from critics who say asking for a multimillion … [Read more...] about Televangelist wants his followers to pay for a $54 million private jet.
