Pope Francis has broken his silence on retirement rumours, saying he has no plans to resign in the near future and dismissing rumours about his poor health as “court gossip”. Nevertheless, the pontiff said he would not hesitate to quit if he felt that he was no longer up to the job. “When I see that I can’t do it, OK … I will do it in the great example of Pope Benedict,” he said. Benedict XVI , who is 95, quit in 2013. It was the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years, announced during a meeting with cardinals - the same kind of assembly Francis scheduled for next month. Speculation has been mounting about the future of the Pope’s papacy, fueled by his recent health conditions and his surprise decision to call the meeting of cardinals in late August, a time when the Vatican is usually in holiday mood. Francis also previously announced a visit to L’Aquila, an Italian town linked to Celestine V, a pope who resigned in the late 13th century, leading some to wonder … [Read more...] about Pope Francis dismisses resignation and health rumours as ‘court gossip’

It’s 4 July – but the US has nothing to celebrate this Independence Day
It’s 4 July, but the USA has a lot more to be ashamed of than to celebrate. Rather than parades, hot dogs and fireworks, let’s take the past few weeks alone as a snapshot of what the “land of the free” really symbolises in 2022: turmoil over abortion, civil rights, gun control and insurrection. Does the US deserve a birthday party? Not from where I’m standing from across the pond (and don’t get me wrong: Britain wouldn’t warrant streamers and confetti either, not after the likes of Partygate , Tory sleaze , Brexit and the shocking, inhumane treatment of refugees ) – but if you were to ask me what immediately springs to mind when I think of the US at the moment, it’s the heinous overturning of Roe v Wade and the continued oppression of women . Just last night, I was transfixed with horror while watching the hashtag #shes10 trend on Twitter, as people reacted to news that a 10-year-old rape victim was forced to travel to a neighbouring state after … [Read more...] about It’s 4 July – but the US has nothing to celebrate this Independence Day
We now know Trump’s Big Lie cost his supporters millions of dollars — and taxpayers even more
Monday’s January 6 hearings revealed that in the wake of the 2020 presidential election and Donald Trump’s continuous repetition of his election fraud lie, the former president’s campaign team sent fundraising emails requesting donations for a fictitious “Official Election Defense Fund.” Trump raised around $250 million in contributions from Big Lie believers who thought they were funding an investigation into election-rigging. Instead, people’s donations were spent in ridiculous ways — such as reportedly paying $60,000 to Kimberly Guilfoyle for a two-minute speech in which she introduced her boyfriend at the January 6th ‘Stop the Steal’ rally. But as expensive as upkeep on Trump’s Big Lie has been for his supporters, that is nothing compared to the hundreds of millions it has already cost taxpayers — and will continue to cost us in the future. As the House Select Committee attempts to measure the impact of Trump’s Big Lie in broken norms, criminal statutes, and acts of … [Read more...] about We now know Trump’s Big Lie cost his supporters millions of dollars — and taxpayers even more
I was so wrong about Eric Greitens
In all my years of interviewing people for articles, there have only been two people whose charisma made an immediate impact. When I say “impact”, I mean that upon meeting them I wanted to run through a wall for them and be part of whatever they were doing. The first encounter was with Chad Pregracke, the founder of Living Lands and Waters, an organization that plies the inland rivers of America cleaning up decades of refuse. I spent a day with Pregracke on the Mississippi hauling out refrigerators, Styrofoam coolers and other garbage. Despite my fear of snakes, it was one of the best twelve hours of my life. The second person that I would have followed into battle was Eric Greitens. Yes, that Eric Greitens, the disgraced former governor of Missouri, and the star of the recent “hunting RINOs” (Republicans In Name Only) campaign ad in his doomed quest to resurrect his dismal reputation and become the Republican candidate for Senator from the Show Me state. “The RINO feeds on … [Read more...] about I was so wrong about Eric Greitens
