A Horsham based charity is on the hunt for a fundraising volunteer. Horsham and Crawley Samaritans have launched a campaign to recruit a collection coordinator.Director of the charity, Kevin Hawkes said: “This post is absolutely to vital to our branch.“We don’t receive any government funding so therefore our branch is solely funded by donations.”The position won’t have set hours and the person does not need to be a listening volunteer.Kevin added that commitment will depend on the nature and timing of events.The main purpose of the role is to coordinate collections on behalf of the Samaritans to help raise vital funds. Children’s charity the NSPCC is asking residents of Oxfordshire to think of them when making your New Year’s resolutions for 2019. The NSPCC in Oxfordshire is recruiting new volunteers for its schools’ service and fundraising branches to start in the first months of the new year.For the charity’s schools’ service, Speak Out Stay Safe, volunteers go into primary schools to teach children to recognise abuse and neglect through age-appropriate safeguarding assemblies and workshops.Pupils are taught to speak out if they are worried, either to a trusted adult or to Childline.Volunteers spoke to 21,529 children in Oxfordshire in the 2017-2018 academic year, delivering assemblies at 101 primary schools in the county.Julie Hilton, NSPCC Schools Service Manager, said: “I really admire that our volunteers give up their time to make a difference to the lives of children.“We have had children who have spoken out about abuse as a direct result of our … [Read more...] about Make it your New Year’s resolution to volunteer for the NSPCC Oxfordshire

Lisa O’Brien can’t do enough to help the people who use Eastside Community Centre in Whitby, but at the centre’s Christmas lunch the attention was on her as she received a belated award for her volunteer work. Lisa organises dozens of events and activities in and around the centre and supports people who come in looking for help.She is paid to work nine hours a week but puts in another 20 or more each week organising fundraising events, supporting people in difficulties and undertaking many little jobs. Picture: Terry Ife Archant A Sidmouth woman has organised a series of fundraisers to boost a volunteer programme supporting some of the poorest communities in the world. Vanessa Cullimore is aiming to raise £800 for International Citizen Service (ICS) before she heads out to Kenya later this year to support growing businesses in the country. The 23-year-old was inspired by her friend’s trip to Tanzania and went herself for three months last year and is now looking forward to her next trip. The Sidmouth resident, who will be travelling with Balloon Ventures, said: “I wanted to raise awareness about their work because I did not know about it until my friend mentioned it.
