July 19, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

At least 13 people have died this month in water-related incidents, as the sweltering UK heat drives more and more to seek refuge in sometimes perilous waters. Today, five people were pulled from the sea at Clacton Pier, Essex, after getting into difficulty - with one person still missing. Fukushima nuclear reactor at risk of collapse if another earthquake hits facility

May 30, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

A melted-down reactor in the Fukushima nuclear power station resting precariously on corroded supports could be toppled over by a strong earthquake, new photos have revealed. The images, which were taken by a robot, showed the reactor was resting unsteadily on a fragile frame of corroded supports. While the interior of the damaged Dai-ichi reactors in Japan was too radioactive for humans to enter safely, a remote-controlled robotic camera has sent back pictures from reactor No 1. The reactor was one of three which melted down in 2011, when a catastrophic tsunami caused by an earthquake knocked out the cooling systems at the plant. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, was so forceful it shifted the Earth off its axis and triggered a tsunami which swept over the main island of Honshu and killed more than 18,000 people. Israel and militants agree to fragile Gaza ceasefire

August 8, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Israel agreed on Sunday night to a fragile ceasefire with militants in Gaza as Palestinian officials said the death toll in the latest round of fighting had risen to 41, including 15 children . The two sides announced on Sunday evening that an Egypt-brokered ceasefire would begin at 11.30pm local time. However, shortly before midnight there were reports of fresh rocket fire from Gaza, raising the prospect that the truce would not last through the night. Israel continued to pummel the Palestinian enclave on Sunday with airstrikes, while Islamic Jihad retaliated with dozens of rockets, including a launch targeting Tel Aviv. The Hamas-run ministry of health in Gaza announced on Sunday night that 41 Palestinians had been killed so far, including 15 children, and 300 people injured. There have been no significant injuries on the Israeli side. The current round of fighting, the worst between Israel and Gaza since last May, began on Friday when Israel launched what it … [Read more...] about Israel and militants agree to fragile Gaza ceasefire

Ukraine war: What are the risks of a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant amid the war with Russia?

August 8, 2022 by news.sky.com

Another attack on Europe's largest nuclear power plant amid the war in Ukraine "underlines the very real risk of nuclear disaster", according to the United Nations watchdog. Rafael Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), described shelling at the Zaporizhzhia plant in southern Ukraine on Saturday as "out of control" and "extremely serious". 'No basis' for Zelenskyy-Putin peace talks - follow Ukraine updates live While Russia and Ukraine blamed each other - accusing the other side of "nuclear terrorism" - Mr Grossi urged for the "utmost restraint" around the site. Experts, meanwhile, warn that the plant getting caught up in the conflict could result in a nuclear accident similar to the one in Fukushima, Japan in 2011. On Friday, shelling near the city of Enerhodar in southwest Ukraine hit a high-voltage power line that feeds into the nearby nuclear power … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: What are the risks of a nuclear accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant amid the war with Russia?
