What a French travel blogger thought of Whitby
It pulls in people from all over the globe. And while many of us will agree that Whitby is rather fabulous, what do those unfamiliar with the seaside town think of it when they visit for the first time? Well one French travel blogger has written a review on the website Salut Bye Bye entitled "Stop in Whitby in Yorkshire, in the footsteps of Dracula (brrrr)". Here is a rundown of what they thought. Stop in Whitby in Yorkshire, in the footsteps of Dracula (brrrr) First impressions "Facing the North Sea, Whitby fascinates with its human-sized English village charm, legends and silent confrontation with the waves of the North Sea." Whitby Goth Weekend "Before visiting Whitby, we decide to go around the city by car to soak up the atmosphere. We quickly realize that the city seems immersed in a parallel world. This weekend, Whitby saw her 46th "Whitby Goth Weekend", a Gothic festival...fascinating! "The whole town seems to have changed times. I had wandered on to a shared car/pedestrian street and was oblivious to my … [Read more...] about Food is less fattening in French
Top of Les Pops: Ten famous singers who recorded songs in French
English may have long ruled supreme in the global music industry but a surprising amount of legendary pop stars have tried their luck at singing in French. Why is very much up for debate. It could be because they wanted to expand their international following, or maybe they just lost a bet with their old French schoolteacher. In any case, these decisions have given way to some harmonious hidden gems and some musical faux pas. We’ll let you be the judge of who deserves top prize for best musical performance by a non-native French speaker. Eurythmics - Tous les garçons et les filles British synth-pop duo Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart gave a positive 80s twist to Françoise Hardy’s 1962 classic 'Tous les garçons et les filles'. Lennox has recorded other songs in French (including a Christmas carol) and seems to have a good grasp of the language. Robbie Williams – L’amour Supreme The charismatic and equally controversial former Take … [Read more...] about Top of Les Pops: Ten famous singers who recorded songs in French
With flags, song, pride, French celebrate unifying victory
It was a victory for all of France and the home crowd did it justice, pouring into Paris' Champs-Elysees Avenue by the tens of thousands to celebrate in an explosion of joy. France's 4-2 win over Croatia in the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday marked the second time in 20 years that France has won the World Cup, and came at a time when the people feel needy. "It represents enormous things," said Goffrey Hamsik, dressed in a hat resembling a rooster — the French national symbol — and a shirt with the No. 10 for Kylian Mpappe, the 19-year-old breakout star who hails from the Paris suburb of Bondy. "We've had lots of problems in France these past years," he said, recalling deadly terror attacks. "This is good for the morale ... Here, we are all united. We mix. There is no religion, there is nothing, and that's what feels good." Troublemakers marred some of the festivities at the top of the Champs-Elysees, breaking the window of a major store, throwing bottles, temporary … [Read more...] about With flags, song, pride, French celebrate unifying victory
