French police held a fourth person for questioning in Paris on Thursday after investigators raided two shops at the centre of an "ultralight" marijuana craze, a legal source said. Authorities also extended the detentions of three others taken in for questioning after the shops were searched by the drugs squad on Wednesday. The two so-called "coffee shops" -- one of which had queues out the door in recent weeks -- are among dozens which have sprung up across France in recent months. They claim to be legally offering marijuana buds, oils and other products obtained from plants with less than the French limit of 0.2 percent of THC, the psychotropic compound that produces a high. Instead the products contain cannabidiol, or CBD, a compound used for medical marijuana treatments and which is authorised in France. Investigators suspect small traces of THC may nonetheless be present in the products, which would be illegal under French law. Under a recent notice by the country's anti-drugs task … [Read more...] about French police detain four after raids on cannabis ‘coffee shops’

Two new "coffee shops" in Paris that sold products derived from cannabis have been closed after being raided by police. Police raided the two "coffee shops" on Wednesday morning and took three people in for questioning. The cafes were immediately closed and it's not clear if they will reopen. The new cannabis-selling shops in Paris, which opened in the 2nd and 11th arrondissements of the city, took advantage of a grey area in the law which has not classified the legal status of CBD (cannabidiol) products made from hemp, including toothpaste, creams, cakes and teas as well as cannabis. The products in these shops are supposed to contain only 0.2 percent of THC which means that they have no effect on a person's mind unlike normal cannabis available illegally. But earlier this month French prosecutors signaled they were not happy with the new businesses when they opened an official probe to "verify whether the legal conditions of sale of … [Read more...] about Paris: Cannabis ‘coffee shops’ raided and closed by police
Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons has closed one of its Welsh stores, just six months after opening. The coffee shop was located on Working Street, The Hayes in Cardiff city centre and was part of the brand's UK roll out. It had opened in December 2017 and was the second Tim Hortons store to open in the Welsh capital following the first on Cardiff's Queen Street in November last year. The store closed on Sunday, June 24 and Tim Hortons has cited the proximity of its Cardiff branches as a reason for the closure. A spokesperson for Tim Hortons UK said: "Our location at The Hayes was too close to our Queen Street restaurant." They added: "Future openings are not affected and since launching in June 2017, Tim Hortons has been fantastically well received by the public. "We now have restaurants in and around Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and Belfast." The location was previously home to Artigiano, which closed down suddenly in July 2017 before Tim Hortons moved into the site later in … [Read more...] about Tim Hortons closes Cardiff coffee shop six months after opening
What are these "coffee shops"? Two shops selling cannabis and cannabis or more specifically "cannabidiol" based products (CBD) opened in central Paris and just outside the capital last week. Cofyshop, the first of its kind in the French capital itself, is located in the trendy 11th arrondissement and the other, E-Klop is in Puteaux, a west Paris suburb. How come they are opening now? There has been a softening on cannabis laws in France which means that it is legal to sell a weak version of the drug. In order to be within the law, the product sold must contain less than 0.2 per cent of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. The products do however contain CBD -- short for cannabidiol -- which is believed by some in the scientific community to have anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties without the psychoactive effects (the “high” or … [Read more...] about What’s the story behind Paris’ new cannabis-selling coffee shops?
