The political parties are setting out their ideas for the country.Labour likes to talk about the risk of privatising the NHS, accusing the Conservatives of wanting to do a deal with Donald Trump.Meanwhile, the Conservatives have criticised Labour's plans to nationalise part of BT, to provide free broadbandBut what do nationalisation and privatisation actually mean? What is nationalisation?Nationalisation is when a government takes control or ownership of private property, like a company. It is complex, but there are different ways this can be done. For example, a government could buy up 50.1% (ie the majority) of the shares in a company. Private owners don't have to agree to transfer ownership to the government - it makes that decision for them. Full nationalisation involves a government taking on an industry's entire assets and operations. Labour has promised to provide free “full-fibre” broadband for every home and business by part-nationalising BT. In a speech due to be delivered in Lancaster on Friday, Jeremy Corbyn will outline his proposals to create a new British broadband public service, saying it will “bring communities together in an inclusive and connected society”. The scheme would be a radical shift in provision of broadband services, which are currently provided by companies at an average cost per household of about £30 a month. It builds on Labour’s existing plans to nationalise the energy utilities, water companies, postal services and railways as part of its plan for a transformation of the public sector. Party strategists are hoping that such an eye-catching consumer offer to voters will help narrow the poll gap with the Tories, who are trying to keep the election focused on Brexit and immigration. Labour’s plan to provide free broadband to everyone in Britain is essential to allow Britain to compete in the global economy, John McDonnell said on Friday, defending the proposals against claims that they were the beginning of a general programme of nationalisation. The shadow chancellor told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the plan to take over BT’s Openreach is “very much following the model of what has happened elsewhere”. He continued: “And yes, it is ambitious, but we have to be ambitious if we’re going to compete in the global economy. “And it doesn’t just have economic benefits, it has environmental benefits in terms of basically people locating in their local towns and not commuting, some people moving into rural and coastal areas as well so they’re properly connected, and it has social implications as well.” News of the scheme prompted shares in BT to drop nearly 4% on Friday morning and led TalkTalk to … [Read more...] about Free broadband essential to make UK competitive, says John McDonnell
The whistle-blower whose complaint about President Trump's effort to press Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden jump-started impeachment efforts has been revealed to be a CIA officer who has been detailed to the White House. The agent, identified as a man, has returned to working at the CIA, the New York Times reported. The paper included an explanation from its executive editor about why it published the information. The whistle-blower's lawyer, Andrew Bakaj, called it 'deeply concerning and reckless, as it can place the individual in harm’s way' and declared his client's right to remain anonymous. Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire said during House testimony Thursday that he would protect the whistle-blower from any reprisals, and said his decision to come forward through channels was the 'right thing to do.'
