An international coalition of Catholic institutions have pledged to take their money out of fossil fuels. The commitment by 35 religious orders, lay organisations and social justice movements to “divest” their money from the polluting energy sources was announced by the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM). Those signed up to the move include humanitarian aid organisation Caritas Internationalis, three Catholic banks with balance sheets totalling about E7.5 billion, as well as several dioceses and other institutions. The announcement, aimed at tackling climate change and its impact on communities, was made on Earth Day. Sinn Féin Councillor John Feely has pledged the party’s support to a new environmental campaign which is calling for the divestment of local government pensions away from fossil fuel companies. Fossil Free Northern Ireland is a Friends of the Earth initiative that aims to take the use of fossil fuels out of Northern Ireland’s economy, society and environment. The campaign is calling for the Northern Ireland Local Government Officers Superannuation Committee (NILGOSC) to divest the £350 million of pensions which are currently invested in fossil fuel companies. It held a Fermanagh campaign launch at Fermanagh House recently. FOSSIL fuel divestment campaigners have again been gathering in Bradford calling on the council to ditch its fossil fuel investments. The call has come following New York City’s decision to do so and campaigners are asking Bradford Council to do likewise. New York City is understood to have announced earlier this month that it is divesting its $191 billion pension funds of fossil fuels. Bill de Blasio, New York’s mayor, also announced that the city is suing the world’s largest oil and gas companies for damages caused by climate change in a two-pronged assault that he said is aimed at “standing up for future generations”.
