Midwifery students being taught how to help men give birth
Midwifery students are being taught how to help men give birth in a textbook that experts have warned is rife with anatomical fiction. Edinburgh Napier University told training midwives that they may be caring for a “birthing person” who has male genitalia and a prostate gland, in a bid to support transgender people . A module guide on how to provide safe care in childbirth told students: “It is important to note that while most times the birthing person will have female genitalia, you may be caring for a pregnant or birthing person who is transitioning from male to female and may still have external male genitalia. “You need to be familiar with the catheterisation procedure for both female and male anatomy. For this reason, where appropriate, this book refers to the birthing person.” The guide, obtained by The Telegraph, explained the “male anatomy catheterisation” procedure during birth, commonly used during caesarean section to drain excess fluids, along with diagrams on … [Read more...] about Midwifery students being taught how to help men give birth
Russian soldier who shot grandfather dead begs widow for forgiveness
A Russian soldier on trial for war crimes in Kyiv has said he only shot a civilian after being threatened by his comrades, as he begged for forgiveness from the victim’s wife. Vadim Shishimarin, 21, has admitted to shooting a 62-year-old man in the early days of the war in Ukraine and faces life imprisonment. At a hearing in Kyiv on Thursday, Mr Shishimarin reportedly said he initially refused to shoot the civilian - tractor driver Oleksandr Shelipov - but was ordered to and threatened by another Russian soldier. Mr Shishimarin addressed the victim’s wife with a plea for forgiveness. “I admit my guilt. I understand you can’t forgive me. I ask forgiveness,” he said in the dock, according to a BBC reporter in the courtroom. He was confronted during the trial by the victim’s wife, Kateryna Shelipova, who said her husband was wearing civilian clothes and wanted answers as to why he was killed. “Tell me what did you feel when you killed my husband? Do you repent this … [Read more...] about Russian soldier who shot grandfather dead begs widow for forgiveness
Boris Johnson opens door to increased immigration from India in exchange for trade deal
Boris Johnson on Wednesday opened the door to increased immigration from India to the UK in exchange for a trade deal, as he prepared to meet Narendra Modi , the country's prime minister. Speaking from his plane, the Prime Minister said he hoped to strike a trade deal "by the end of the year" and that he had "always been in favour of having people come to this country". He suggested more relaxed rules for Indian immigrants could be offered by the Government in exchange for a speedy deal that allows the two countries to trade without tariffs. "We have a massive shortage in the UK, not least in experts in IT and programmers," Mr Johnson said. "We're short to the tune of hundreds of thousands in our economy. "We need to have a professional approach but it has to be controlled." His comments come after ministers announced they would loosen visa restrictions for Indian students earlier this year. Easier immigration is a key demand of Mr Modi in trade negotiations, and could … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson opens door to increased immigration from India in exchange for trade deal
Ukraine’s EU application is splitting Europe in two
Ukraine's bid to join the European Union has left the bloc struggling to square its support for Ukraine with the concerns of western member states, many of which are skeptical of enlargement and wary of setting a precedent of "fast-track" membership. Member states appear largely open to eventual Ukrainian membership, but division between east and west has arisen as to exactly how and when this might happen. The road to Brussels is long and, at times, painful for aspirants. The journey can typically take around a decade, involving labyrinthine negotiations and structural national reforms. The shortest process was for Austria, Finland, and Sweden—all took nearly five years to meet the criteria. Negotiations to expand into eastern Europe took more than 10 years. The existential threat from Russia prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his top officials to call for an accelerated process, an appeal which appears to have fallen flat. The EU has acted with … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s EU application is splitting Europe in two
Five ways Meghan and Harry’s royal exit mirrored Princess Diana’s life
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 's royal story has mirrored Princess Diana's in key respects, some intentional, some less so. The Duke of Sussex regularly mentions his mother, including when he launched lawsuits against the media and during the couple's Oprah Winfrey tell-all. However, the comparisons are more extensive than even the prince himself has gone into detail to describe. Suing the Media Harry and Meghan have launched seven media lawsuits since September 2019 and while Princess Diana was not quite as busy as her son she did make use of her legal team. Diana sued Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) in 1993 after both the Sunday Mirror and Daily Mirror published pictures of her working out in a leotard and cycling shorts, which had been taken in the privacy of a gym. The newspaper group apologized after a backlash and eventually settled out of court, as did the gym owner Bryce Taylor, who sold the photos, the BBC reported. Harry has also sued MGN for phone … [Read more...] about Five ways Meghan and Harry’s royal exit mirrored Princess Diana’s life
