Some 2,400 people in Brussels held hands on Sunday to form a human chain as part of demands for tougher measures to combat climate change. The peaceful demonstration came just ahead of the UN's climate conference in Madrid, where policymakers are gathering to resolve outstanding issues in relation to the environmental emergency. Moeen Ali continued his self-imposed exile from Test cricket when he told England he did not want to be considered for the four-match series in South Africa starting on Boxing Day. Joe Root, and selectors Ed Smith and James Taylor, all spoke to Moeen last week but failed to persuade him to change his mind leaving England with Jack Leach and the uncapped Matt Parkinson as the spinners in a 17-man squad. It now looks as if Moeen’s Test career could be over and he will combine being a white-ball specialist for England with playing in franchise leagues around the world where his bowling and attacking batting will attract plenty of offers. It’s time to confront A-level marking’s dirty little secret
There is an injustice haunting exams in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. No one mentions it because no one has any clue how to solve it. Last week, however, a thought struck me. Let’s see what you think. On Thursday, thousands of young people will log on to computers and find out their A-level grades. We already know that pupils from state schools will receive proportionately fewer top grades than those in private schools. But what most people don’t know is that a bit of the exams process that happens after pupils have received their grades makes the inequity just that tiny bit worse. Exam grades are subject to appeal. If a school has enough cash, it can return a paper to be marked again. And tests completed by the exams watchdog, Ofqual, show that when examiners re‑mark they are more generous than they are first time around.
