The number of full-time officials dedicated to climate change in the Foreign Office has dropped by almost 25% in the two years since Boris Johnson became foreign secretary, according to data released under freedom of information (FoI) rules. Johnson has also failed to mention climate change in any official speech since he took the office, in marked contrast to his two predecessors. The cutback in climate change diplomacy has come despite the prime minister, Theresa May, asserting that the UK leads the world on climate action. The UK has been praised for its past climate diplomacy, which helped pave the way to the landmark Paris agreement. “It is extremely disappointing,” said Prof Sir David King, who was the foreign secretary’s special envoy for climate change from September 2013 until March 2017. “Yes, we have the Paris agreement, but everybody knows the difference between what the agreement says – if possible no more than 1.5C rise – and what … [Read more...] about Foreign Office climate staff cut by 25% under Boris Johnson

The flight safety center under the aegis of the International Civil Aviation Organization has apologized for the search on a plane of the Russian flagship air carrier Aeroflot at a London airport in late March, Russian transport minister Maxim Sokolov said on Friday, TASS reports. When asked by reporters whether the center has explained reasons for the move, the minister replied: "yes, it did. It even apologized. It was the flight safety center under the ICAO aegis, operating in the UK." Aeroflot executives said on March 30 that the UK authorities had searched a plane, bound to perform a return flight SU2583 from London to Moscow, without providing any explanations for their actions. PUBLISHED: 11:06 28 March 2018 Fraser Whieldon A Foreign Office minister made a grand claim about Harpenden in the House of Commons yesterday. Mark Field said: “Harpenden is indeed the most middle-class, and probably Tory-voting, town in the whole UK.” This followed a question from the town’s MP Bim Afolami about the UK’s future relationship with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) after Brexit. Mr Field, the minister for Asia and the Pacific, replied: “Never let it be said that my Honourable Friend does not have his finger on the pulse of his constituents. I am sure they talk of little other than the OECD in the Stockbrokers Arms in Harpenden.” He assured Mr Afolami, who himself used to work for HSBC, that the UK should expect a renewed commitment from the OECD to open markets. But the minister was warned by the Labour MP for Hove Peter Kyle: “Hove is also middle class — it used to vote Tory, too.” … [Read more...] about What do you think about what a Foreign Office minister said about Harpenden?
