A summer of BBQs is on the cards this year as the Met Office's supercomputer backs four months of hotter-than-average conditions until September. The majority of Brits have enjoyed the early shoots of summer this weekend, with clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid-twenties banishing all memories of a soggy April. Over the next three days the mercury could be lifted once again to the 27C mark, if forecast thunderstorms don't wash away the summer optimism too much. The good news is that hotter conditions most likely lie ahead. The Met Office says it is four times more likely that the period from now until the start of August will be much-hotter-than-normal, as opposed to much-cooler-than-average. The summer should be a good one for BBQs ( Image: Press Association Images) The forecast model shows there is a 60% to 80% probability of above-average temperatures for the UK across the three months from the start of June to the start of September. … [Read more...] about UK weather: BBQ summer on the cards as Met Office supercomputer predicts baking 4-months

Wagatha Christie: our half-time report as the grudge match of the season plays out
The post on Coleen Rooney’s Instagram account was a warning. “Don’t play games,” she wrote, “with a girl who can play better.” At times during this week’s ‘Wagatha Christie’ libel trial, Rebekah Vardy must have wished she’d heeded it. Vardy brought this action, intent on clearing her name after Rooney accused her of being the “grass” who leaked stories from her private social media account to a tabloid newspaper. Yet during three gruelling days of cross-examination, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has resembled a defendant – and one who occasionally appeared to be struggling to get her story straight. At the half-time whistle on Thursday, it looked to be game over. But, as any football fan knows, you can never rule out an upset. After Rooney’s first day on the witness stand on Friday, the outcome appears a little less certain. The Royal Courts of Justice has seen nothing quite like this . When Mrs Justice Steyn dreamt of becoming a High Court judge, is this what … [Read more...] about Wagatha Christie: our half-time report as the grudge match of the season plays out
The Frenetic Basketball Nostalgia of Winning Time
The 1980s Los Angeles Lakers were one of the most dominant teams in sports. At a time when professional basketball was on its heels, the Lakers brought new excitement: Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird, Jerry Buss and the glitzy Forum Club, and an up-tempo flow offense. That’s the story of HBO’s big-budget series Winning Time , whose Season 1 finale aired on Sunday, May 8. David Sims, Vann R. Newkirk II, and Ross Andersen—three of The Atlantic ’s biggest basketball fans—get together to discuss the series. What do they make of the accusations from former players that the show is inaccurately over-the-top? Does the producer Adam McKay’s style energize and streamline the show—or just add distraction on top of the glut of story lines? And how do you dramatize a history with a well-known outcome? Listen to their discussion here: The Review : Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | Pocket Casts The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity. It contains … [Read more...] about The Frenetic Basketball Nostalgia of Winning Time

Putin’s death could spark 3 nightmare scenarios with ‘terrorists snatching Russian nukes & weapons of mass destruction’
VLADIMIR Putin's death could trigger a scenario that allows bad actors to get their hands on nuclear weapons amid political chaos in Moscow, experts fear. Rumors about the Russian tyrant’s ailing health have surfaced for months as reports claim that he could transfer power to a former spy while he undergoes surgery. Kremlin loyalist Nikolai Patrushev, 70, has been touted as a potential replacement - but it's not known who succeeds Putin if he becomes incapacitated or dies. Russian expert Taras Kuzio, a research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, revealed there will be "infighting at the top of the Kremlin over who will be the one to take over". Experts have speculated that Russia could strengthen its relationship with the East, or become a failed state in a post-Putin world. CHALLENGE TO THE US Geopolitical expert Brandon J Weichert warned that a savvier figure could succeed Putin and a future Russian state could potentially form an authoritarian axis with China. … [Read more...] about Putin’s death could spark 3 nightmare scenarios with ‘terrorists snatching Russian nukes & weapons of mass destruction’
