We’ve known from the beginning that the Focus Estate was coming – revealed alongside hatchback and Vignale variants. The recipe is of course a very simple one, and it’s an industry-wide set of ingredients – take one hatchback, add a bit of extra bodywork over the rear axle and if you’re feeling really fruity, fettle the suspension ever so slightly. The thing about the Focus Estate is that the base car is already the best-handling in its class – not to mention the best-selling. So does the extra heft spoil the brilliant Focus? What’s new? Unsurprisingly, the biggest change can be found from the C-pillar back – the Focus Estate receives a lengthened rear end with a more upright tailgate to accommodate a greater volume of luggage. That difference is notable, too – it has 608 … [Read more...] about First Drive: The Ford Focus Estate adds extra practicality to an already brilliant package

WHEN it arrived 20 years ago to replace the Escort, the first Ford Focus was a sensation and a dynamic game-changer. The blue oval marque's car won numerous top awards and it dominated the sales charts for years until it was eventually upstaged by its smaller Fiesta sibling as people downsized. The last couple of Focus models have not really inspired but, nevertheless, the Focus has still racked up more than two million sales in the UK and over 20million worldwide. Even with tough opposition, the Focus has remained a no-nonsense, value-for-money choice in a declining segment. The growing popularity of SUVs has hit every car in this sector so Ford have thrown everything at the all-new fourth-generation Focus in a bid to return it to the top of the charts. It is on sale now, with first deliveries in time for the new registration in September, and it is a major step up in quality and style on the current model and, in many cases, it is even cheaper. The new Focus sits on an all-new … [Read more...] about The Ford Focus ups its game
THE old French hippie in the motorhome in front of us was fairly battering it around the bends as we climbed through the forest in the hills above Nice. In fact, it was hardly even a motorhome, more a Luton dumped on the back of a pick-up truck. “The cups and saucers must be all over the floor by now,” remarked my co-driver, as we watched it sway back and forth at each turn of the road. Not so our own cheeky little number, which was flatlining it through the chicanes and managing the hairpins without even the hint of body roll. And so let me introduce this year’s much-anticipated new arrival, the Ford Focus, the favourite car, no less, of a certain Elena Ford – the blue oval badge marque’s vice-president for global dealer and consumer experience. The Focus is a best-seller worldwide, which makes the introduction of each new model something of a buttock-clenching time for the blue oval badge marque. And this fourth-generation version has been revised from … [Read more...] about New Ford Focus is meeting demands
A furious Nottingham couple have joined a group of people who could potentially take legal action against Ford which could cost the car giant millions. Nearly 600 Ford Ecoboost car owners have registered so far with law firm Roscoe Reid - including Andy and Abi Middleham, of Gedling - who say they are among the alleged victims. The couple emptied their savings account to buy their used £7,700 Ford Focus 1.0-litre Ecoboost, and planned to keep it for years. In November last year Ford UK recalled the six-year-old car as part of a nationwide review to replace a degas hose pipe from the coolant reservoir to the engine. Mr Middleham said: "I think Ford has made it clear it is not going to change its mind and is not offering compensation to any new engine failures now." Read More What matters to you The car was returned - but three months later there appeared to be engine problems and black smoke pouring from the exhaust, said the couple - and then their nightmare began. 4 France won the world cup, Google was founded, an intern called Monica Lewinski became famous all over the world and, oh yes – Ford launched the Focus. It's only 20 years ago, but it's hard to overemphasise the impact this cheeky little hatchback had on family motoring. I remember engineers on the launch in Deauville, France saying: "I didn't think we could do a car like this!". Ford had been run for years by accountants, who clung like shipwrecked sailors to the Ford family purse strings. Chief executive Jac Nasser, however, wasn’t family and while he had controversial long-term views about Ford's future, he absolutely understood the damage done by cars like the execrable Mk5 Escort. Ford's engineers were in near revolt about the cost-cutting on that car. “Never again,” was the battle cry and Nasser and mercurial engineer Richard Parry-Jones created a design and engineering hot-house that cultivated the Focus. To have worked on that team is like … [Read more...] about 2018 Ford Focus review – still brilliant, but has it lost its sparkle?
