A well-known former pub in Derby city centre which closed down at the end of last year is up for sale with an asking price of almost half a million pounds. The Wardwick Tavern - also known as The Wick - shut its doors just before Christmas. The Ghost Bar, an outdoor area that formed part of the venue, also shut. The Grade II-listed building is currently owned by pub company Greene King. At the time when it confirmed its closure, the firm said that it hoped to reopen The Wardwick Tavern “sometime in 2018” with a new operator at the helm. But, nine months on, the venue, which dates back to the 18th century, remains closed and has since been put up for sale with an asking price of £495,000. The agent appointed to sell the property is Fleurets. In its particulars, it describes The Wardwick Tavern as a “charming character building within the vibrant Cathedral Quarter”. DELIVERY vans could soon be replaced by a fleet of electric vehicles, according to new Government plans. A report released this week outlined new moves for "last-mile" deliveries, which could see the end of the white van man in busy city centres. Traditional diesel-powered delivery vans may be phased out as part of the Department for Transport's "Future of Mobility" and "Last Mile" plans. In a bid to reduce emissions and congestion around the country, the reports suggest polluting delivery vehicles be replaced with a fleet of electric cargo bikes, quadricycles and micro vehicles, along with electric vans. The number of vans on UK roads has risen in recent years largely thanks to a surge in online shopping, with over four million currently registered. But the DFT's plans suggest deliveries of goods into cities and towns over the "last mile" should be made by smaller, more eco-friendly vehicles to free up space and cut down emissions in populated areas. Posh supermarket chain Waitrose is set to ditch both of its Manchester city centre stores. The little Waitrose convenience stores at Gateway House Piccadilly and Bridge Street in Spinningfields have been snapped up by rival Co-op. It comes as part of a deal to off-load the failing shops by the John Lewis Partnership, which is behind the grocery retailer, along with two other shops in Birmingham and London. Waitrose said the 57 staff employed in Manchester will either move to new stores in the business or transfer to the Co-op, once the sale goes through in the autumn. The announcement came as a surprise as the luxury brand only opened in Piccadilly four years ago and in Spinningfields in 2010. However, the owners blamed market uncertainty and tough trading as the reason behind the sudden off-loading, although it still operates 50 John Lewis outlets and 350 Waitrose shops across the UK.
