How do the football pitches at the Southland Centre affect the future of the site? With councillors deciding in April to close the Southlands Centre’s business centre by September, the future of the site is unclear. Business owners currently operating out of the building remain furious with the decision and are campaigning to keep the site open as a business centre. But one distinct possibility - given the council’s pledge to build thousands of houses in the coming years - would be for the Southlands Centre building to be demolished and the land sold for housing. But as things stand, the football pitches at the Southlands Centre might end up being a bit of a snag to anyone wanting to build across the whole site. Since the closure of the Southlands Centre’s sport facilities in 2016, the pitches have been operated by Everyone Active based at Middlesbrough Sports Village. At the moment, the entire Southlands Centre complex, including the business centre and football … [Read more...] about How Southlands Centre football pitches could affect site future

Families have hit out at off-road bikers riding across football pitches enjoyed by scores of young players. Residents living near to Kidsgrove’s Birchenwood Playing Fields say they have spotted upto five bikers heading through the area. Now organisers with Ladsandads, whose teams use the facility, say the pitches are being churned up with calls being made for the site to be made more secure. Mark Porter is chairman of the Kidsgrove branch of Ladsandads. The 49-year-old said: “What they are doing is incredibly dangerous and they are wrecking the pitch. "It is happening a lot where four or five bikes are being ridden while people are trying to play football. "It is really dangerous and someone is going to get hurt sooner or later because some of them are riding without helmets. "I think that it needs to be a joint effort to stop them, the public need to keep reporting them everytime that they see them. The police need to be taking these bikes off them and the council need … [Read more...] about Bikers told: “You are ruining football pitches enjoyed by children”

A FOOTBALL pitch size of forest was destroyed every second last year, a worrying new report claims. That means enough trees to span the whole of Italy disappeared as forests from the Amazon to the Congo were burned and knocked down. The total loss topped 113,000-square-miles last year, according to Global Forest Watch who created an interactive graphic showing the devastation. Its data, released this week, measures "tree cover loss" or the death of a tree's leaves. The study found tropical forests around the globe lost 61,000-square-miles in 2017 which equates to roughly the size of Bangladesh. That makes 2017 the second-worst year on record after - 2016 - since researchers began gathering the data back in 2001. The Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil, Indonesia, Madagascar and Malaysia suffered the biggest losses in 2017. Brazil lost 17,000-square-miles of tree cover in 2017 alone, down 16 percent from the previous year.
