Published 7 July 2012 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Organisers of a Bristol street carnival have urged people not to come to the area expecting a large scale event. St Pauls Carnival was due to take place this weekend but was cancelled following uncertainty over the safety of participants and spectators. It is thought there may be some small community events held over the weekend but nothing for the wider public. Chairwoman of the event Rebecca Gibbs said no plans have been arranged for this weekend. "The clear message is that there is not going to be a full scale event this year," Ms Gibbs added. "I'd advise people not to come to St Pauls expecting a street festival and stalls. It is not going to be there." Vegetarian woman ‘traumatised’ after cooking sausage with ‘snout and ears’ for boyfriend
When it comes to food, some people won't go anywhere near meat and that means they don't even like cooking it for others. One vegetarian woman recently decided to treat her boyfriend and their daughter to a dinner of sausage and chips as a change from their regular meat-free diet - however, she soon regretted her choice. Chrissie Anker was cooking the sausages when she noticed that one of them looked uncannily 'like a pig'. The 21-year-old mum from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, was 'disgusted' when she checked on the bangers in the oven, only to discover one looked like it had formed little ears. The senior support officer claims she then took the meat out of the cooker and was stunned to spot what looked like a snout as well - leaving her cringing at the 'horrible but funny' sight. Remarkable friendships from the animal world
In the leafy Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey lies a very different kind of farm: the astonishing Funny Farm, a not-for-profit animal sanctuary open to the public two days a week, created by New Jersey's own Doctor Doolittle, Laurie Zaleski. Every animal here is a rescue – abused, abandoned, disabled – and Zaleski has healed and protected more than 600 animals over the last 20 years, from retired racehorses to raucous roosters. "We have 115 roosters," she said. And it sounded like it! Correspondent Lesley Stahl asked, "For those people who have never been here, never even heard of the Funny Farm, how would you describe it?" "I say Heaven on Earth, especially for animals," Zaleski replied. "And for people, because when you walk through the gates, you can feel the inner peace and harmony, because they all get along here. "My mother had the original Funny Farm, and she said it's full of animals and fit for lunatics!" laughed Zaleski. As she writes in her book, "Funny Farm: … [Read more...] about Remarkable friendships from the animal world
Using candy and jam to protect Brazil’s Amazon rainforest
Tapirs, jaguars, and giant armadillos are some of the 430 species of mammals that share a home with Luiz Henrique Lopes Ferreira in Brazil's eastern Amazon . Ferreira makes and sells sweets, jams, and liqueurs from more than a hundred varieties of local fruit trees. The 22-year-old is part of a new generation showing how forest communities with economic opportunities can help promote biodiversity protection and prevent deforestation. He lives in the Tapajos Arapiuns Extractive Reserve, which spans over 640,00 hectares (1.58 million acres) almost 90% of which is covered in forest. It is home to over 370 different types of bird, 99 species of fish and around 13,000 people, mostly Indigenous and mixed heritage caboclo communities. The Amazon rainforest is rich in biodiversity but many species are now under threat Identifying himself as Indigenous, Ferreira says that although he was born in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas State, the forest has been his real home since his … [Read more...] about Using candy and jam to protect Brazil’s Amazon rainforest
Canadian Grand Prix 2017: Kimi Raikkonen has a point to prove as ‘little bits and pieces’ help Lewis Hamilton
Little bits and pieces. That was what Lewis Hamilton spoke of ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday. Little bits and pieces which Mercedes’s engineers have changed on the set-up of his car, and the sister model of team-mate Valtteri Bottas after they were squashed by Ferrari in Monte Carlo. Whatever those little bits and pieces were – and it’s believe that they centred upon minor adjustments such as brake balance and suspension settings in order to get the tyres working in their correct temperature window – they appeared to make a big difference here. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Montreal’s Ile Notre Dame is a different track to Monaco in many ways – it’s much quicker for a start, with top speeds significantly exceeding 300 km/h and has a more slippery surface, but like the Principality it’s also one massive brake test. Its heavy demands on braking see drivers jumping hard on the left pedal for 19 per cent of the lap, and experiencing decelerative forces up to … [Read more...] about Canadian Grand Prix 2017: Kimi Raikkonen has a point to prove as ‘little bits and pieces’ help Lewis Hamilton
Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?
The world is currently witnessing biodiversity loss at a rate and scale unprecedented in human history. Over 1 million species are at risk of extinction. Many are disappearing before we have had a chance to discover them. Climate change, pollution and disappearing habitats are among the forces that have pushed nature toward a cliff edge. The situation is so severe that scientists say we are facing the " sixth mass die-off " — the scale of which has not been seen since the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago. Yet 2022 presents a window of opportunity, with the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Canada set to bring together world leaders to discuss a road map to deal with the crisis in nature. In our latest Global Ideas web special we take a deep dive into why protecting biodiversity is so critical, and what the concrete and effective solutions are to tackling the problem. 'Biodiversity loss is the greatest threat to humanity' What impact does … [Read more...] about Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?
