One of my new favourite driving routes starts with gin and ends with cheese. If that sounds good to you, it starts off the A5 highway, near the Aber Falls waterfall, at a North West Welsh distillery of the same name. It is known for two things: one, that it produces both excellent Welsh dry and small-batch gins , and two, that its makers will also be revealing their first whisky before 2019 is up. After a quick tour and sampling (only sips, mind, you have driving to do) it will be time to venture into lush Snowdonia, where you’ll drive past pearlescent grey-blue lakes near Capel Curig, harsh rock faces and wiry grasslands. Next, at the pretty former mining village of Betws-y-Coed, bear right and head down the A470 towards Llechwedd Slate Caverns. But how do cheese and caves connect? The public are also invited to forward their nominations.Entrants must submit recipes with their entry forms and ingredients should, as far as possible, be Manx grown, reared or produced.Shortlisted chefs will compete at heats to be held at the University College on Thursday, June 20, at 2pm and the two finalists will then go head-to-head to win the title at the Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival in the Villa Marina Gardens on Sunday, September 15, at 1pm. The annual awards, which recognise the highest quality produce in the country, as well as the leading individuals, suppliers and companies, received a record 320 entries across all categories — a 20 per cent rise from 2018, most notably in distilling which increased from 18 in 2018 to 41 this year. The company was named as a finalist in the Cheese & Dairy category of the awards for its Dark Island Cheddar. Now in its 20th year, the Excellence Awards have been restructured for 2019 and focus on the standout products driving value and consumer choice in the market.
