How one chef is using food to heal Buffalo: “Food is love and food is what brings people together”
The city of Buffalo is trying to return to normal following last week's mass shooting at a Tops Supermarket that killed 10 Black people. There to help the city heal is Chef Darian Bryan. He opened up a pop-up restaurant in the area, with funds going towards helping the families of the victims. "These folks are hurting so I'm like you know what, food is love and food is what brings people together, and I'm so grateful that I can put a smile on these folks' faces," he told CBS News. Bryan is originally from Jamaica, but is a staple to Buffalo. He has hosted several Jamaican pop-up events and has cooked for the Buffalo Bills. He also owns the catering business called "The Plating Society." On Wednesday, several Buffalo Bills players served thousands of meals , some prepared by Bryan, at the site of the shooting. For many, that supermarket is the only one they can easily access. "That community is like where you can find the most Black people in Buffalo. that's where … [Read more...] about How one chef is using food to heal Buffalo: “Food is love and food is what brings people together”

When you’re autistic, cooking a meal isn’t a straightforward task
The day had come – finally, I had received my PIP assessment from the Department For Work and Pensions. This would determine whether, as an autistic person, I would be awarded the disability benefit I had applied for. However, I knew it wouldn’t be straightforward. PIP has been subject to controversy probably since inception and it’s common knowledge that many individuals who apply find themselves fobbed off with spurious excuses, and end up being awarded nothing, despite having sat through the humiliating assessment. This often means that they must go to a tribunal to get the decision overturned. This process can take months – sometimes even more than a year. And so, I wasn’t surprised when my assessment turned out to be a complete misrepresentation of my reality as an autistic person. In the document, the DWP had essentially suggested that I was not ‘autistic enough’ to be given the financial help I needed. In that moment, I felt intense despair at still having to … [Read more...] about When you’re autistic, cooking a meal isn’t a straightforward task
Shoppers warned milk prices will soar even higher amid cost of living crisis
Shoppers have been warned that the price of milk will carry on rising as the cost of living crisis continues to grip struggling families. Arla Foods' chief commercial officer Peter Giortz-Carlson blamed high energy prices and the war in Ukraine for the increased costs. He said farmers are struggling with the price of packaging and feed for animals, which have risen by 40% - and said this will have to be passed on to customers. Mr Giortz-Carlson told Sky News that milk supplies could be impacted as farmers "cannot cover the costs" of keeping running their farms. He insisted Arla Foods' "main job here is to keep the products flowing, and make sure that there is a supply of food on the shelves." Arla Foods sells dairy products such as Lurpak butter, Cravendale milk and Skyr yoghurt to supermarkets across the country. The warning from the dairy producer comes after UK inflation surged to its highest level in 40 years. Are you worried about rising supermarket … [Read more...] about Shoppers warned milk prices will soar even higher amid cost of living crisis

The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades slept in car park for a week after suicide attempt: ‘I just wasn’t existing in that life’
The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades parked his car in a retail park and slept in it for one week after considering suicide seven years ago. The presenter joined Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes on Thursday’s This Morning where he recalled he ‘couldn’t see himself in tomorrow’ after the breakdown of his marriage and his charity failing. ‘Seven years ago, everything flopped for me; the charity that I was running, my marriage I was in,’ Jay told the show. ‘I basically got in the car and just drove. ‘For me, I couldn’t see myself in tomorrow, so I was looking for a bridge to drive into. ‘But my naivety, as I’m driving up the motorway, every bridge had a barrier. So, I’m driving up, and I’m like, “okay, next bridge, okay the next bridge”, and it didn’t happen.’ Jay continued: ‘Eventually, the car started flashing like the petrol light came on and I turned off and I remember going to a retail park and I stayed there for a whole week in the car just sitting there. … [Read more...] about The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades slept in car park for a week after suicide attempt: ‘I just wasn’t existing in that life’
