Why can’t England have clearer rules on exercise? Ministers come under mounting pressure to clarify ‘woolly’ lockdown restrictions and set firm distances like counterparts in Scotland and Northern Ireland

· January 12, 2021 ·

Ministers are under mounting pressure to clarify exactly how far people can travel for exercise amid public and police confusion over 'woolly' lockdown rules. Government advice urges people to stay 'local' but does not specify a distance in law, which has resulted in officers making their own interpretations and incorrectly fining walkers driving just five miles from home. Boris Johnson, who has himself come under fire for cycling in the Olympic Park seven miles from his Downing Street flat, has been urged to follow the devolved administrations and set clear boundaries. In Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has permitted people to travel up to five miles outside their local authority area, and in Northern Ireland, the Executive has placed a 10-mile limit. Wales also has a 'stay local' rule. Hopes of immediate clarification for England appeared to be scotched this evening as a senior police officer said people should instead use their own judgement. So much for staying at home! Crowds of people head to beaches and town centres despite Boris Johnson begging families to stay at home as Covid deaths hit 563 – the deadliest Sunday in eight months

What is a 'reasonable excuse' for going outside? Under the rules in England, you must not leave or be outside of your home except where you have a 'reasonable excuse'. This will be put in law. The police can take action against you if you leave home without a 'reasonable excuse', and issue you with a fine (Fixed Penalty Notice). You can be given a Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 for the first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400. A 'reasonable excuse' includes: Work - you can only leave home for work purposes where it is unreasonable for you to do your job from home Volunteering - you can also leave home to provide voluntary or charitable services Essential activities - you can leave home to buy things at shops or obtain services. You may also leave your home to do these things on behalf of a disabled or vulnerable person or someone self-isolating Education and childcare - you can only leave home for education, registered childcare, and supervised … [Read more...] about So much for staying at home! Kobe Bryant pilot is blamed for crash: Federal investigators rule he ‘desperately wanted to please’ NBA star client so ignored weather warnings and safety standards before becoming disorientated in the clouds and smashing into hill – killing 8 others

· February 9, 2021 ·

Kobe Bryant did not put pressure on his helicopter pilot to fly in dangerous conditions, safety officials said on Tuesday as they ruled the crash was caused by the pilot's poor decision to fly that they say was driven by a 'self-induced' pressure to please his famous client. On January 26, 2020, pilot Ara Zobayan, 50, took the NBA legend, his daughter Gianna, two of Gianna's teammates, their coach and some of the girls' parents up in a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter. The others on board were Gianna's teammates Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester, Alyssa's parents, John and Keri Altobelli, Payton's mother Sarah Chester and their coach Christina Mauser. They were planning to fly from Orange County to the Mamba Sports Academy - the school Bryant founded - to watch the girls in a tournament but at 9.45am, forty minutes after take-off, the helicopter plowed into a hillside in Calabasas, killing everyone on board, at 140 knots - 160mph. Until now, investigators have never been able to … [Read more...] about Kobe Bryant pilot is blamed for crash: Federal investigators rule he ‘desperately wanted to please’ NBA star client so ignored weather warnings and safety standards before becoming disorientated in the clouds and smashing into hill – killing 8 others
