Hurricane Matthew: floods hit Jamaica and Haiti as storm approaches

· October 4, 2016 ·

Heavy rains from the outer bands of Hurricane Matthew have drenched Jamaica and Haiti, flooding streets and sending many people to emergency shelters as the category 4 storm approached the two countries. Two deaths were reported in Haiti, bringing the total for the storm to at least four. Matthew had sustained winds of 140mph (220kph) as it moved north, up from 130mph (210kph) earlier in the day. The center was expected to pass just east of Jamaica and near or over the south-western tip of Haiti early Tuesday before heading to eastern Cuba, the US National Hurricane Center in Miami said. “We are looking at a dangerous hurricane that is heading into the vicinity of western Haiti and eastern Cuba,” said Richard Pasch, a senior hurricane specialist with the center. “People who are impacted by things like flooding and mudslides hopefully would get out and relocate because that’s where we have seen loss of life in the past.” “It has the potential of being catastrophic,” said … [Read more...] about Hurricane Matthew: floods hit Jamaica and Haiti as storm approaches

Floody HELL: Thousands of homes at risk of being swallowed by rising waters with more than 200 areas braced for more misery… as Scandinavian storm hurtles towards UK threatening more snow and ice chaos from TONIGHT

· February 1, 2021 ·

Blizzards bringing up to 16in (40cm) of snow are set to blast across a swathe of Britain this week – with yet more rain predicted for saturated parts of the country, after temperature fell to -7C (19F) overnight. Forecasters warn the wintry weather will hit from 10pm tonight and could last the rest of the week – while 200 flood warnings or alerts are in force for England today along with a further two for Wales. February has begun with a slew of weather warnings for much of northern England and Scotland all of the country, up until at least the end of Wednesday – but forecasters have warned snow could also fall later on this week. Hundreds of flood victims yet to receive any cash promised under Government scheme

· February 23, 2021 ·

Hundreds of flood victims whose homes were deluged in 2019 are yet to receive money promised to them by the Government. Homeowners say the delays mean they “live in fear” of another flood while waiting for payouts pledged 16 months ago by Prime Minister Boris Johnson . The Property Flood Resilience scheme (PFR) is worth up to £5000 to home owners left devastated by floods during the last two years. It helps those flood hit families pay for flood gates, the raising of electric sockets and other flood resilient measures. But the Mirror can reveal that councils in some of the hardest hit regions have only paid out a fraction of the grants to stricken residents. Do you enjoy reading about politics? Sign up for all the best politics news from the Mirror The delay in the Government-backed schemes has been blamed on the "complex" Flood victim Suzanne Stankard from Mytholmroyd in Yorkshire, said she sent her 'expression of interest' for the grant last May and is still … [Read more...] about Hundreds of flood victims yet to receive any cash promised under Government scheme

UK weather: Temperatures to hit 17C by the weekend in dramatic rise after extreme freeze

· February 15, 2021 ·

Sun-starved Brits will finally see an end to the bitingly cold weather as temperatures are set to soar into the double digits today. But flood warnings remain in place with a string of alerts in force across many parts of England. Met Office forecasters said that milder weather will begin from Monday with the mercury rising to highs of up to 13C in England and Wales. By the weekend that will rise further to spring-like warmth of 17C. It comes after the Beast from the East 2 battered the country and left Brits shivering in a long and bitingly cold deep freeze. The extreme weather saw the UK record its coldest temperature for 65 years at Braemar in Aberdeenshire on Wednesday night when the mercury dropped down to minus 23C. Forecasters are now optimistic about the change in the weather and the rising temperatures. Chris Fawkes from BBC Weather said: We’re starting to draw up more of a southerly flow of wind and that will start to drag up some of the warmer air from … [Read more...] about UK weather: Temperatures to hit 17C by the weekend in dramatic rise after extreme freeze

UK weather: Up to 19 inches of snow to fall after blizzard warning – will it fall in your area?

· February 5, 2021 ·

The UK is set to be blasted by blizzards this weekend as a freezing Nordic front rushes down from the North. Severe weather warnings have been issued for large parts of the UK today and tomorrow. Forecasters have predicted heavy snowfall in large stretches of the country, from the south coast of England to the northern tip of Scotland. Those in the worst affected rural areas could find themselves cut off for days, the Met Office has warned, as deep snow on the roads makes travel dangerous. The snow will move down from the top to the bottom of the UK as the weekend goes on, and is forecast to blanket the southern coast come Sunday evening. Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: “Into the weekend snow will continue across much of Scotland, and is likely to increasingly fall to low levels before beginning to move south into northern and eastern England. “We are likely to see some very large accumulations across higher parts of Scotland especially, with … [Read more...] about UK weather: Up to 19 inches of snow to fall after blizzard warning – will it fall in your area?
