A move 300 years in the making: UK takes steps to recognise the Irish language
Since the UK divided Ireland, successive Governments in London have discouraged people from speaking the Irish language in the Northern part of the island. Activists then attempted over the next101 years to get the language fully recognized. Now the UK has begun the process to do just that. In Belfast, Irish nationalists have welcomed the move. Caoimhín O’ Seanáin, a teacher in West Belfast, told Euronews: “We no longer have to be second-class citizens in our own Country. “The Irish Language will be much more visible. It will be available for use in the Courts. Legislation that goes back centuries will be removed.” The Act will also recognise the relatively unknown Ulster-Scots language. Rhys McClenaghan denied chance to defend Commonwealth Games title in shock ruling
Rhys McClenaghan has been barred from defending his gymnastics title at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in a shock ruling by the sport’s international ruling body. The 22-year-old and two Northern Ireland team-mates have been told they are ineligible to compete in the event later this year because they routinely represent Ireland in worldwide Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) competitions. McClenaghan, who pipped Max Whitlock to pommel gold on the Gold Coast four years ago, said on social media: “Earlier today I was informed that the [FIG] will not be allowing myself and my team mates to compete at the Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland. “I was born in Northern Ireland, my residence is in Northern Ireland and I represented and won Gold for Northern Ireland in the last Commonwealth Games. “I feel that FIG do not understand the gravity of the Belfast Agreement and the unique situation pertaining to Northern Ireland. Meet Simon Case: The highest ranking public official to be implicated in the partygate scandal
As the head of the civil service, Simon Case is the highest ranking public official to be implicated in the partygate scandal . Aged 43 and with a PhD in political history, the civil servant’s roles have included director of strategy for GCHQ and principal private secretary to David Cameron and Theresa May. He left Government in 2018 to take up a role as private secretary to the Duke of Cambridge but was drafted back into Whitehall in April 2020 to help with the Government’s pandemic response efforts. His deployment to the Cabinet Office at the height of the first national lockdown - which was initially intended as a temporary secondment from his royal duties - led to his rapid promotion through the ranks of the civil service high command. In June 2020, just three months after his return to Government, he was promoted to the role of permanent secretary to run 10 Downing Street. And in September of the same year he was appointed to lead the civil service, becoming the … [Read more...] about Meet Simon Case: The highest ranking public official to be implicated in the partygate scandal
Top Partygate civil servant Simon Case was once Prince William’s right-hand-man
The Sue Gray report has ruffled feathers in Westminster and around the UK today after its damning conclusion that the Partygate scandal "fell well short" of standards expected in No. 10. Many have anticipated the outcome of the report from the senior civil servant for several months after its release was delayed during a Met Police investigation into parties in Downing Street. While Miss Gray, who joined the civil service straight out of school, is enormously respected in Whitehall, she was actually the second choice to investigate Partygate - after top civil servant Simon Case had to step down. Just a week after Mr Case was initially earmarked to write the report, it was revealed he had been present at a private gathering in his own office that breached coronavirus restrictions. Tory windfall tax row widens as two more Cabinet ministers reject the policy
Cabinet ministers have lined up to warn Rishi Sunak off plans for a windfall tax on energy firms , insisting the move would damage the economy and have unintended consequences. In a highly unusual display of public dissent, Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, and Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, became the fifth and sixth Cabinet members to speak out against the policy in the space of a week. The Chancellor has refused to rule out the idea of a one-off windfall tax on North Sea giants, which is being pushed by Labour and has support from some Tory backbenchers - although others fear it would be unconservative. Mr Sunak is attracted to the idea of a windfall tax that would offer firms different rates based on how much money they are prepared to invest in new energy infrastructure in Britain, The Sunday Times reported late on Saturday. Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, last week described a windfall tax as “taxing investment in jobs”, while Liz Truss, Suella … [Read more...] about Tory windfall tax row widens as two more Cabinet ministers reject the policy
