Shoppers warned milk prices will soar even higher amid cost of living crisis

May 19, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Shoppers have been warned that the price of milk will carry on rising as the cost of living crisis continues to grip struggling families. Arla Foods' chief commercial officer Peter Giortz-Carlson blamed high energy prices and the war in Ukraine for the increased costs. He said farmers are struggling with the price of packaging and feed for animals, which have risen by 40% - and said this will have to be passed on to customers. Mr Giortz-Carlson told Sky News that milk supplies could be impacted as farmers "cannot cover the costs" of keeping running their farms. He insisted Arla Foods' "main job here is to keep the products flowing, and make sure that there is a supply of food on the shelves." Arla Foods sells dairy products such as Lurpak butter, Cravendale milk and Skyr yoghurt to supermarkets across the country. The warning from the dairy producer comes after UK inflation surged to its highest level in 40 years. Are you worried about rising supermarket … [Read more...] about Shoppers warned milk prices will soar even higher amid cost of living crisis

Drinking too much coffee during pregnancy may damage baby’s liver, scientists warn

July 24, 2019 by www.mirror.co.uk

It's a drink that many people rely on to kick start their day, but a new study has warned of the dangers of drinking too much coffee during pregnancy . Researchers from Wuhan University in China have revealed that drinking more than two cups of coffee a day during pregnancy may impair the development of the baby's liver. In the study, pregnant rats given caffeine had offspring with lower birth weights, altered growth and stress hormone levels and impaired liver development. Published in the Journal Of Endocrinology, the findings indicate the equivalent of two to three cups of coffee may alter stress and growth hormone levels. It suggests this is done in a manner that can impair growth and development, and increase the risk of liver disease in adulthood. ( Image: Getty Images) The researchers point to previous studies which suggest prenatal caffeine intake of 300 mg/day or more in women, approximately two to three cups of coffee, can result in lower birth … [Read more...] about Drinking too much coffee during pregnancy may damage baby’s liver, scientists warn

Pugs are not ‘typical dogs’ because of their ‘lifetime of suffering’, says study

May 18, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Pugs can no longer be considered a “typical dog” because extreme breeding has given them a long list of severe health issues . The desire for extreme, baby-like dogs with bulging eyes , folds of skin and flat faces has led to long-lasting and life-shortening health problems , which mean the animal is subjected to a “lifetime of suffering”. Dr Dan O’Neill, senior lecturer in companion animal epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, told The Telegraph that pugs lacked the “basic functions” expected of a canine. “We have dogs that are typical, like Labradors, where they have a long nose and a tail and are not that dissimilar to a wild dog,’’ he said. “Obviously, they have a different temperament but physically they just look like a wolf or a coyote or a dingo or a fox. “We’ve drafted a list of core body functions that any dog should expect to be able to do when it’s born and when it’s alive and these are very basic. “For example, they should be able to blink.
