The Prime Minister's joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill have resigned after Theresa May lost her majority in the General Election. The pair have been in the firing line after the PM's gamble of calling a snap election backfired, with disgruntled Conservatives highly critical of the role of Mr Timothy and Ms Hill played in the campaign. Former Tory MP Gavin Barwell will replace the duo as Mrs May's new Downing Street chief of staff. The ex-housing minister served in the Government until losing his Croydon Central seat on Thursday night. Mr Timothy acknowledged that one of his regrets was the way the party's controversial social care reforms, dubbed a "dementia tax" by critics, had been handled. So far just the first 60 names have been announced, including Nasa astronaut Peggy Whitson, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and England footballer Steph Houghton. The other 40 will be added during the season this October. The annual series - which shines a light at issues affecting women all over the world - is this year encouraging women to make a change. The line-up also includes performance poet Rupi Kaur, acid attack survivor Resham Khan and dancer and TV star Jin Xing. Seemingly endless stories of harassment, inequality, and simply less visibility in many spheres of society, can feel depressing and disempowering. SIR – You report ( June 30 ) that almost 19,000 family doctors plan to leave the NHS in the next five years due to retirement, stress and burnout. Another reason is that the current role of GPs is boring and a reflection of what they have become – public-health doctors buried in vaccination programmes, time-consuming and impersonal remote consultations, overwhelming bureaucracy and failing management. Look at what has been taken away from them: acute medicine and maternity care. These areas were what formed the long-term bond between doctor, family and community. To restore general practice, GPs need to be allowed to provide 21st-century care, accommodating specialisation and embracing high-tech diagnosis and therapy. Central to this is speed of access in the appropriate setting to specialised doctors. GPs should be able to work as specialists and team up with secondary care to develop a fully integrated personalised service. Rising fuel prices are 'crushing' social care workers with some finding they cannot afford to go to work, according to a trade union. Care workers are also leaving jobs in the sector to work at supermarkets due to rising fuel costs according to John Mooney from Unison Scotland. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, he said: 'What you have is workers who have 20 visits per day in areas where they have no option but to use their car. 'We have members approaching us and saying that they simply can't afford to go to work.' The union has previously called for increased fuel allowances for care workers following the sharp rise in fuel costs, but representatives say they were advised the issue was down to individual employers. Care workers are also ditching cars in favour of walking, Mr Mooney has warned. 'What we have is a situation where members are coming to us saying they have spoken to their employer about a schedule that covers walking only without them having to drive.' Theresa May's bid to do a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to save her premiership has been plunged into uncertainty. In a move that could jeopardise her frantic attempts to remain as Prime Minister, the DUP is accusing Downing Street of announcing a deal on its MPs voting with the Tories in the Commons before an agreement has been reached. After the PM sent her Chief Whip Gavin Williamson to Belfast to negotiate a deal to keep the Conservatives in power, No. 10 said the DUP had agreed to the principles of an outline agreement. But in a dramatic twist just before midnight on Saturday, Sky sources said No.10's account of the talks had been issued in error and the DUP had not yet reached any agreement with the Tories. ATHLETICS: I am grateful for Fiona Macdermid​ keeping me up to date with the efforts of her children Kara and Noah as they compete in Europe and the United Kingdom during the next couple of months. Their first race was on June 29 at the Meeting International in Liege, Belgium, where Kara ran from the front and won her 1500m heat in 4 minutes 21.09 seconds. Noah was pipped in a slow tactical 1500m, finishing second in 3m 55.63s. They moved onto Heusden in the Netherlands on July 2, competing in the KBC Nacht Night of Athletics, which had tight races, resulting in both producing times close to their personal bests.
