On Thursday, June 27, the high representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and vice-president of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, made a statement and said the European Union is deeply concerned about the Bashar Assad regime's attacks in Idlib, in northwestern Syria. We are all aware Syrians are still suffering under never-ending shelling, airstrikes, bombings and attacks after more than eight years of conflict, especially now in Idlib, the last stronghold of the Syrian opposition. According to Mogherini's statement, more than 230 civilians lost their lives in the last three weeks, while more than 330,000 have fled their homes. Three million more remain at risk, Mogherini said on behalf of the union. Rugby LeagueBY SIMON KESLEP Coca-Cola National Schools Rugby League southern zone trials kicked off on a high note yesterday at the Oil Search National Football Stadium oval two. Today will see final matches played followed by the presentation of awards and finalising of the Southern zone NSLR squad to take part at the National Schools Rugby League Championship scheduled for July 22-27 in Port Moresby. The championships were initially planned for July 1-8. The opening U-14 boys division match was between Moresby North-west and Moresby North-east putting on strong performance. Moresby North-west came out victorious with on a 14-0 score-line with tries scored by Lapo James, Philemon Tulipet and Ouba Mairam. North-east had couple of chances swaying in their favor in attack but could not go pass determined and strong defensive sets by North-west. BY PATRICK NIATO TOM Four young Americans missionaries who were reported trapped and stranded in the Sugu valley area in Kagua Southern Highlands were safely rescued late last week. With the other three Catholic nuns and a family from Buka, the Southern highlands Police task force team and PNG defence force members successfully rescued them. Southern Highlands Provincial Police commander Gideon Kauke said the team of 30 Police and defence force members were deployed to the Sugu valley after they received reports of these foreigners being trapped due to the intense tribal fighting. He said the rescue operation started at around 10 pm on Thursday when they launched in to the fighting zone and safely rescued the four young missionaries from the Bible Church Missionary (BCM) with three Catholic nuns and a family from Buka.
