YouTube has banned a family of vloggers from its platform, after the parents were convicted of child neglect in the course of filming their popular “prank” videos. Michael and Heather Martin, who post videos under the name FamilyOFive, were sentenced to five years of probation for child neglect in September last year, after viewers raised alarm over their treatment of their children in videos. In one video, Michael Martin, posting as DaddyOFive, sprayed disappearing ink on the floor of his son’s bedroom, before calling him in and scolding him for it. As the son broke down in tears, Martin revealed the joke, telling him it was “just a prank.” In another video, Martin instructed his children to slap his daughter in the face, prompting concern from other YouTubers. “The fact that a parent would say to themselves, ‘It’s OK for me to film my son slap my daughter and put it up on the Internet where she’s crying’,” one YouTube … [Read more...] about FamilyOFive: YouTube bans ‘pranksters’ after child abuse conviction

Justin Bieber famously found his first fame on YouTube, but music industry veteran Scott Cohen thinks artists can learn from a new generation of stars emerging on the video service. Speaking at the Music 4.5: The Rise of Video conference in London, Cohen said Jenna Marbles, Tiffany Alvord and Dave Days are just three examples of YouTubers who can offer valuable lessons for labels and musicians alike. "What are these kids teaching us that we’re missing? Because they’re doing things very differently to the way the music industry’s doing it," said Cohen, who claimed that Marbles (real name: Jenna Mourey) is on track for $10m of earnings from a mixture of advertising and endorsements in 2013, driven by her YouTube channel's 11.4m subscribers. "YouTube is their social media platform. It is how they’re getting their message out. That is how they’re engaging with their audience. And it’s their revenue platform. When was the last time you saw an artist … [Read more...] about What can Youtubers Jenna Marbles and Tiffany Alvord teach musicians?
Recollection and emotion are inextricably linked. This means that the most memorable views are often captured by someone else. Think about it. So how wise and brave of Tom Daley to tell his own story. In his own time and in his own words. Whatever the outcome of this, he can rise above it. He got there first and delivered his message without innuendo and showed us how great is the value of honesty. For brands these days, authenticity is vital. If there is one strain of conventional wisdom pervading every single brand, it's the importance of differentiation. And these days exceptions rule. So Olympic diver Daley has revealed he is in a relationship with a man. The London 2012 bronze medallist has decided to use YouTube as the means to out his narrative. This is an impressive example of strategic control. Daley demonstrates why celebrity brands must quickly embrace transparency in an open and candid way, before a high-profile TV vehicle catapults them to prime time. Modern PR folk are … [Read more...] about Tom Daley’s YouTube video is an impressive display of strategic control
The European parliament approved the largest, and most contentious, overhaul of copyright legislation in two decades on Monday. When the directive comes into effect, it will be the biggest change to internet regulation since General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The copyright changes are best known because of their two most controversial clauses, articles 11 and 13, which have been the nexus of a ferocious battle between corporate lobbyists, online activists and freedom of expression groups. What do the changes mean for the internet? Will I still be able to upload content online? The legislation emphasises people will still be able to upload content, but technology firms, including Google, have warned they will have to remove vastly more content automatically. Companies such as YouTube and Facebook already remove music and videos that are copyrighted. For example, YouTube scans uploads and matches them up to a database of files submitted by content owners, giving the original … [Read more...] about What do major copyright changes mean for internet freedom?
Climate change could be kept in check if a phaseout of all fossil fuel infrastructure were to begin immediately, according to research. It shows that meeting the internationally agreed aspiration of keeping global warming to less than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels is still possible. The scientists say it is therefore the choices being made by global society, not physics, which is the obstacle to meeting the goal. The study found that if all fossil fuel infrastructure – power plants, factories, vehicles, ships and planes – from now on are replaced by zero-carbon alternatives at the end of their useful lives, there is a 64% chance of staying under 1.5C. In October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said the difference between 1.5C of warming and the earlier international target of 2C was a significantly lower risk of drought, floods, heatwaves and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. Christopher Smith, of the University of Leeds, who led the research, … [Read more...] about Immediate fossil fuel phaseout could arrest climate change – study
