Marriage on BBC review: Sean Bean and Nicola Walker deliver acting masterclass in authentic relationship study
Ah, the ‘enduring’ marriage. The comfortable silences stacking the dishwasher, the inconsequential enquiries about a dull working day… the seething over-reaction to the lack of a jacket potato on an airport restaurant’s menu. It’s this seemingly ridiculous fight that Sean Bean ’s introspective Ian picks with his wife Emma ( Nicola Walker ) over her innocuous choice of chips that introduces us to their painfully believable world. It’s full of worry about their child, their elderly parents, their jobs and the ‘is this it’ desperation of middle age. As the plane taxis, they hiss sweary insults at each other. As it takes off, Ian reaches for Emma’s hand again. There’s a quiet romance in that small gesture. Writer and director Stefan Golaszewski made his name with the sitcoms Mum and Him & Her, but this is an altogether more considered and minimalist relationship study. Bean plays Ian with the kind of diminished sadness where a hesitant shuffle into a job interview … [Read more...] about Marriage on BBC review: Sean Bean and Nicola Walker deliver acting masterclass in authentic relationship study
Tesla’s profits knocked by China factory shutdowns as it sells Bitcoin
Tesla has fallen victim to supply chain chaos in China and a damaging bet on Bitcoin, bringing a record run of profits at Elon Musk’s car company to a sudden end. The electric vehicle maker also sold off a chunk of its Bitcoin holdings, the company said on Wednesday, as its bet on the cryptocurrency soured. Revenues at Tesla dropped by 9pc between the second and first quarter to $16.9bn (£14.1bn), though were still 42pc higher than a year earlier. Its revenues were down on the record three-month revenues of $18.8bn it posted earlier this year amid supply chain woes and a factory shut down in China due to Covid restrictions. Telsa said it “faced certain challenges, including limited production and shutdowns in Shanghai for the majority of the quarter” but claimed it “continued to make significant progress across the business during the second quarter of 2022”. Earlier this month, Tesla reported it had delivered more than 254,000 electric vehicles, down from around 300,000 in … [Read more...] about Tesla’s profits knocked by China factory shutdowns as it sells Bitcoin
‘Our chalk streams are rarer than the Brazilian rainforest yet we aren’t protecting them’
From the centuries-old bridge opposite her home in the Hampshire village of Stoke Charity, Ruth Guy surveys the bare bones of the River Dever. Since July she has watched this precious chalk stream, a tributary of the River Test, dwindle to nothing but white rubble. When she first moved here 21 years ago, the 67-year-old tells me, the water was deep enough for her then 12-year-old son to paddle a canoe under the bridge. She points out the watermarks, which show how high it should run. Now only a smattering of aquatic plants – water mint and forget-me-not – are all that are left of this unique habitat (nearly 90 per cent of the world’s chalk streams are in England). Across the other side of the bridge the water has shrunk to a few turquoise pools skimmed by circling swallows. On recent evenings, Guy says, herons and egrets have gathered round for a “feeding frenzy” upon the last remaining fish unable to seek shelter. “This has never, ever, happened before,” she says. “Even apparently … [Read more...] about ‘Our chalk streams are rarer than the Brazilian rainforest yet we aren’t protecting them’
Council leisure cuts could make obesity worse, doctor warns
By Gareth Lewis Published 10 March 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Cuts to council leisure services will have a "depressing, alarming and disastrous" impact on the fight against obesity, a leading specialist doctor has warned. Dr Nadim Haboubi said councils should be spending more on leisure to fight an "obesity crisis". The Welsh government said reductions to council funding had been unavoidable. Leisure services are particularly vulnerable because councils have no legal obligation to provide them. The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) has been asked to comment. 'More active' Wales has high levels of obesity with the Welsh Health Survey 2012 reporting that 57% of adults were overweight or obese. "We already have an obesity crisis in Wales," said Dr Haboubi, chairman of National Obesity Forum Wales. "It is sad that [the cuts … [Read more...] about Council leisure cuts could make obesity worse, doctor warns

Ukraine war: Zelenskyy calls on G7 to help end war with Russia ‘by the end of the year’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged G7 leaders "to do everything possible" to end the war in his country by the end of the year, G7 sources said. Addressing their summit in Bavaria by video link, Ukraine's leader appealed directly to the leaders for more help for his country, and for "intensified sanctions" against Russia. It came as G7 leaders pledged to continue to support Ukraine in the long term. Zelenskyy "had a very strong message that we must do everything possible to try to end this war before the end of the year," the sources said. He also stressed the importance of "not lowering the pressure and continuing to sanction Russia massively, heavily". The West has already adopted several packages of measures since the start of the Russian offensive on Ukraine on 24 February. During his speech, the Ukrainian president "spoke of the harshness of winter" in Ukraine "where it is more difficult to fight". "At the end of the year, we will enter a … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Zelenskyy calls on G7 to help end war with Russia ‘by the end of the year’
