Hardly any of the drivers who have killed on Merseyside's roads have been given the maximum sentences for their crime. The current maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is 14 years and five years for causing death by careless driving, but most are handed just a fraction of the maximum term and some even walk free. Among those who were jailed and set free carried defences of 'just an accident' and 'a coughing fit'. Issues around the shades of grey sentencing for killer drivers has created controversy and sparked a huge debate about whether the law needs to change. ONE of the four sisters killed in a limousine crash in New York state told her sibling that the car was in “terrible condition” minutes before the smash which killed 20. All 18 people in the stretch Ford Excursion SUV limo died on Saturday when the rented vehicle lost control on a steep hill and ploughed through a shop's car park where two bystanders were hit. Four sisters and their husbands, who had hired the car for a 30th birthday party, lost their lives in the crash at 2pm local time in Schoharie, New York state. But according to the victims’ family, they had actually hired a bus to take them to the event which the firm had told them had broke down, it has been reported. Three teenagers died. They were among eleven teens and two adults from Faith Chapel Assembly of God near Kansas City traveling to Arkansas when they crashed in southwestern Missouri. The driver and all other passengers were injured. The tragedy is all too familiar for families mourning the deaths of more than 600 people in 15-passenger van rollovers since 2001.
