Last month had the highest January mortality rate in England since 2002, according to new data. There were 1,462.0 deaths per 100,000 people, compared with the January 2002 figure of 1,581.7, and the 1,424.5 in January 2003. The number of deaths in England was nearly 30% higher last month than the five-year average, with coronavirus reported as the leading cause. There were 68,796 deaths registered in England last month, which was 15,685 more than the January average between 2015 and 2019 - a total 29.5% rise. Anyone who has bought a smartphone since 2015 could be entitled to a share of a £480m payout if a legal claim from watchdog Which? is successful. The consumer rights group is suing US chipmaker Qualcomm, accusing it of using its market dominance to inflate charges to manufacturers, which they have then passed on to millions of Britons in the form of higher smartphone prices. About 29 million people in the UK may be entitled to compensation of around £17 each. Qualcomm's technology can be found in a number of leading brands, including Apple and Samsung. Damages are being sought for all affected Apple and Samsung smartphones bought since 1 October 2015.
