Caroline Jacobs was driving home to Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire on Thursday after a camping trip in Wales. Despite being a member of the RAC, she was only taken to services near the Severn Bridge by an approved partner of the breakdown service. The RAC said it was paying towards the cost of repairs and for a hire car. Mrs Jacobs first called the RAC at 12:30 BST when the warning lights on her Peugeot came on. 'Getting progressively later' She was unable to make it to the nearest slip road and called the police. Highways officers came to her assistance and "at a very slow pace" helped her off the hard shoulder. ‘I realised Sylvia knew about Assia’s pregnancy – it might have offered a further explanation of her suicide’
In 1963, the poet Sylvia Plath , distraught at the break-up of her marriage to Ted Hughes, committed suicide. Six years later, Hughes faced more tragedy when his mistress Assia Wevill - who had lured him away from Plath - killed herself and their four-year-old daughter Shura. Elizabeth Sigmund, a close friend of Sylvia Plath, prompted by the Guardian's account of Wevill's death (Saturday Review, 10/4/99) recalls the aftermath of Plath's suicide and the terrible events surrounding the death of Assia and Shura. In March 1963, I went with my young daughter, Meg, to visit Sylvia Plath's small children in the flat in Fitzroy Road, Primrose Hill, where their mother had killed herself weeks earlier. I had been told that Ted Hughes's aunt, Hilda, was looking after the children, four-year-old Frieda and one-year-old Nicholas. Before gassing herself, Sylvia had left food and drink for her children and made sure they were safe in their bedroom. When Meg and I arrived we found that … [Read more...] about ‘I realised Sylvia knew about Assia’s pregnancy – it might have offered a further explanation of her suicide’

Professor reignites war with Prince Charles over homeopathy support
A 13 year row between The Prince of Wales and a renowned professor was reignited on Wednesday with the launch of a new book accusing the heir to the throne of putting patients at risk with his support for complementary health. Emeritus Professor Edzard Ernst , has previously labelled Prince Charles a "snake oil salesman" and claims he was forced into early retirement from the University of Exeter after a complaint from the Prince’s private secretary. Prince Charles has been a vocal supporter of homeopathy for decades , making impassioned speeches at the World Health Assembly and British Medical Association, and lobbying health ministers to set up a register of holistic practitioners. But speaking ahead of the publication of their new book More Harm Than Good? Prof Ernst and Dr Kevin Smith, of Abertay University in Dundee, said homeopathic treatments were “immoral” and warned that royal backing was “very worrying”. More injury drama for Emma Raducanu as she battles through to reach Citi Open quarter-finals
E mma Raducanu suffered blister problems which left the skin “ripping off” her injured hand, causing fresh concern just weeks before her US Open defence . In furnace-like conditions in Washington and on an eerily quiet court, Raducanu was subjected to the ultimate endurance test in a dogged, second-round win over Camila Osorio at the Citi Open. The 7-6, 7-6 win set up a quarter-final against Liudmila Samsonova today and the question is how Raducanu will be able to recover from her callouses, described as “pretty ugly” by on court interviewer Rennae Stubbs after the match. Witnessed by only a sparse crowd in the US capital, temperatures peaked at 35 degrees with many spectators sheltering under umbrellas and towels because of the fierce heat. In a measure of her resilience, Raducanu was twice pushed to a final set-tie break. Twice she pulled through to close out a victory in this marathon match, which descended into a battle of the blisters in the suffocating heat. After two … [Read more...] about More injury drama for Emma Raducanu as she battles through to reach Citi Open quarter-finals
