A parent reluctant to attend a wedding abroad that will "cost a fortune" and is taking place during their child's exam period at school has received a wave of support from users on Mumsnet, the U.K.-based online forum. In a post on Mumsnet's Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) subforum, user FamilyNightmares said the wedding is "going to cost a lot of money to go as it is far flung" and guests are required to stay a minimum number of nights. "Literally, it is going to cost a fortune. We are expected to go and there will be nuclear fallout if we don't ," the user said. Explaining that they "don't have a close relationship with the bride and groom," the parent said: "I am massively put out that we have to spend this much money and cut back on other things to do so, but I accepted that we were going." Following the earlier phases of the COVID-19 pandemic , which pushed back several wedding plans, 2022 has been a year of catching up on delayed nuptials. According to a 2022 … [Read more...] about Parent told to prioritize teen exams over family wedding abroad

Sisters separated at birth reunited after 30 years thanks to home DNA test
Two sisters who were adopted as babies and lived thousands of miles apart have been reunited thanks to a home DNA test. The popularity of at-home DNA testing has boomed in recent years, as anyone can purchase a simple kit for themselves or a loved one and uncover secrets hidden in their own DNA. MyHeritage, a leading genealogy site, ran a pro bono initiative called DNA Quest in 2018, where it donated 15,000 tests to adoptees to support them in being reunited with their birth families through DNA testing. This resulted in hundreds of reunions, according to the company. Sisters Ashleigh Brown and Laurinda Collado are one of those. Brown and Collado are now aged 33 and 35. Born in the Dominican Republic to the same biological parents, Collado was adopted when she was 5 months old and raised as an only child in Bristol, Connecticut. Two years later, her adoptive parents were given the choice to take in her sister Ashleigh but they chose not to. Instead, Brown was adopted at 6 weeks … [Read more...] about Sisters separated at birth reunited after 30 years thanks to home DNA test

I spent the weekend at ‘Poshstock’ with 10,000 Sloanes in glitter and top hats
Look, I’m not really a festival person. I’ve hated tents ever since my Duke of Edinburgh Award when I got lost in the Chilterns. I hate the sticky sensation of being unclean. Not a big fan of crowds. Don’t like warm beer. So I’ve avoided Wilderness – a decidedly upmarket festival in Oxfordshire – for several years because it looked, well, terrifically silly. A whole load of posh people drinking, dancing and shouting their heads off while wearing pheasant feathers in their hats? Not for me. I get enough of that at my family Christmas. But when a friend suggested we go this year because we could stay in her sister’s house, ten minutes from the Oxfordshire estate on which Wilderness is held, I thought “why not?” A taxi in and out every day. No camping. The possibility of a bath at the end of the night. Surely even I could handle that? The festival’s been running since 2011 and is nicknamed “Poshstock” for the crowd it attracts: mostly 20- and 30-somethings who look like they could … [Read more...] about I spent the weekend at ‘Poshstock’ with 10,000 Sloanes in glitter and top hats
