Retiring Judge Joanna Maze, is looking forward to losing her anonymity in the South Canterbury community she loves but has remained at arm’s length from for the past 11 years. Maze, Timaru's resident District Court judge since September 2011, finished her final court sitting on Friday with "a courtesy farewell between bench and bar" and told The Timaru Herald she made the decision to retire "when I knew that I was beginning to run out of energy ... and a sense that I wanted to have some time left still to do things for myself". "It's a job where you have to maintain a degree of separateness in your life, and that does suit my personality, and this has been a wonderful community to be part of, but I'm ready to be more part of it and that isn't entirely consistent with being a judge in a small community,’’ she said. "South Canterbury really is a delightful community. The people have good values, it is a caring community, it is an ideal size. It's more like a big village really. … [Read more...] about South Canterbury community calling retiring District Court Judge Joanna Maze

I’m on a mission to make sure every new parent regularly measures their baby’s head
Watching Harry scooting up and down our street with his best friend Bella is magical. You would never guess that the first year of Harry’s life was a whirlwind of blue-light emergencies, brain surgeries, and unimaginable fear. You would never think that, under his mop of unruly blonde hair is a shunt – a device which drains the fluid from his brain, and keeps him alive. Harry is my fourth child, and my pregnancy with him was actually my easiest. I had mild gestational diabetes (GD), which was controlled by diet, but other than that I actually glowed. While I was pregnant, I was scanned every four weeks from 20 weeks onwards, which is common for pregnant people with GD. At 36 weeks, my husband and I walked into the scan room. We were calm, expecting a routine appointment. However, about five minutes in, the sonographer went quiet. She then said she needed to get someone else, so we waited. Another lady came in, said nothing and then, after what felt like forever, … [Read more...] about I’m on a mission to make sure every new parent regularly measures their baby’s head

The Italian holiday hotspot which is away from the British crowds – with cheap wine and 5* hotels
IMAGINE a place surrounded by picturesque lakeside villages, medieval castles and hundreds of vineyards. Rovereto is nestled in the base of Italy’s Trentino region and surrounded by the Piccole Dolomiti (the little Dolomites). Perhaps because superstars like the Kardashians are distracted by the uber-expensive Portofino area and the Amalfi coast, Trentino, in the north of the country, is somewhat overlooked. Yet it is a paradise for living la dolce vita, and I soon come to the conclusion it is Italy’s best-kept secret. Germany provides the biggest market for tourists, then Austrians and Scandinavians in search of the Mediterranean sun, minus the scorching temperatures of the south. Italians also flock here to go rock climbing, camping, sailing and to breathe in the Alpine air. I stayed at one of Haven’s biggest holiday parks in the UK – here is what you can expect
ENERGY bills are rising, petrol prices have gone through the roof and even feeding the family is costing more than it should. All of which means expensive foreign holiday you were planning may have to take a back seat yet again. Buy it’s possible to have an incredible trip away without breaking the bank — and without leaving the UK. And time it right, and you’ll get the best of British weather, the best of British scenery — and have a good, fun, active time. So it was for us in Pwllheli, Gwynedd, where my family and I were able to tackle, among other things, bike rides, swimming and even tank driving — and all within the site we were staying. Hafan y Mor is one of Haven’s biggest holiday sites. And just about one of the biggest activities we faced there was the Aerial Adventure. This obstacle course of high platforms, ropes and zip wires took on added meaning for my eight-year-old lad Jack, who had got the jitters and backed out of doing something similar a year or so … [Read more...] about I stayed at one of Haven’s biggest holiday parks in the UK – here is what you can expect
