Pennsylvania Lt. Governor and Democratic Senate nominee John Fetterman has repeatedly expressed openness toward controlled injection sites and other drug decriminalization policies. As drug overdoses have surged over the past decade, many cities — including Philadelphia, San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle — have opened locations at which individuals can use illegal drugs in a supervised environment such that overdose deaths are minimized. Nearly 92,000 Americans died from drug-involved overdoses in 2020, according to data from the National Institutes of Health , marking an increase from nearly 71,000 deaths in 2019. Yet evidence does not necessarily support the argument that injection sites meaningfully discourage drug use. In an analysis of one study, Hudson Institute senior fellow David Murray noted that “participation in facility services did not reduce either the number of injections, nor the number of overdose events, over time,” implying that the sites “may … [Read more...] about ‘I’m For Decriminalizing Across The Board’: John Fetterman Has Repeatedly Nodded To Woke Drug Policy | The Daily Wire

What Happens When Drill and the Justice System Clash in the Courtroom?
Photo-Illustration: Dakarai Akil; Photos: Getty Shortly after the deaths of two aspiring rappers earlier this year, New York City Mayor Eric Adams appeared to take a hard line against drill rap, stressing in a February speech that social media companies should pull the genre’s displays of gun violence from their apps, comparing the removal to Trump’s Twitter suspension. His words sparked backlash, as they not only seemed to toy with the idea of censorship but also evoked the language of authorities’ long-standing moral panic over music created by Black and brown artists. Adams, a former NYPD cop, walked back his comments following a meeting with several rappers — including Fivio Foreign and Maino — which he described as a “great conversation,” and claimed to have reassured performers that he didn’t want to ban drill outright. The city’s official tone on drill might have shifted, but the fact remains that the discourse amongst some authorities surrounding the subgenre seems … [Read more...] about What Happens When Drill and the Justice System Clash in the Courtroom?
Review: Introducing Huawei’s new Watch D
This article was first published at thebit.nz . Huawei’s Watch D is a smartwatch that allows you to measure your blood pressure. It’s easy to use and accurate, comparable to a consumer-grade blood pressure cuff (according to Huawei). For anyone who needs to test their blood pressure regularly, it’s a game changer and a handy tool. US$749 (NZ$1180) for a blood pressure pump is expensive, though. Let’s remember that this is a smartwatch that can test your blood pressure, not a blood pressure pump with smartwatch capabilities . As a health tracker, the Watch D gets a lot right. It has a massive seven-day battery that’s market-leading and has all the trackers you would want. It also comes packed with 70-plus workout modes so you can accurately track your exercise no matter what you’re doing. But it’s hampered by the same problems the latest Huawei devices all run into. The Watch D isn’t compatible with most apps you’ll probably use. Any US-based apps won’t work here. … [Read more...] about Review: Introducing Huawei’s new Watch D
Most people with Omicron didn’t even realise they had COVID-19, study finds
Most people who were infected with the Omicron variant didn't even realise they had COVID-19, according to a new study from Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in the US. The lack of public awareness about being infected means that people can't take steps to prevent themselves transmitting the virus further, which is a major stumbling block for addressing new waves of the pandemic. "More than one in every two people who were infected with Omicron didn't know they had it," said Dr Susan Cheng, a corresponding author of the study which is published in JAMA Network Open. Previous studies have estimated that at least 25% and potentially as many as 80% of people infected with the coronavirus may not experience symptoms, the researchers say. This "low level of infection awareness has likely contributed to the fast spread of Omicron," added Dr Cheng Scientists at Cedars-Sinai have been conducting research into the effects of COVID-19 and the impact of vaccines for more than … [Read more...] about Most people with Omicron didn’t even realise they had COVID-19, study finds
Inside the day-to-day workings of New Zealand’s busiest firehouse
RYAN ANDERSON/STUFF Auckland central's fire station is one of the busiest in the country, and firefighters there say the challenges they face could soon have an impact on the public. Berlusconi’s Sentence: Work with the Elderly
MILAN (Reuters) - A court on Tuesday ordered former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to serve a tax fraud sentence by doing community service with the elderly, in a ruling that restricts his movements but not his political activity. The court ruled that Berlusconi, one of Italy's richest men, must spend four hours a week in a Catholic old people's home on the outskirts of Milan for a year. The home's director said the media tycoon would keep residents company and take them to Mass. The four-time prime minister, 77, will not be allowed to travel outside Lombardy, the region around Milan where he has his main residence, except for restricted trips to Rome. However, Berlusconi's allies said he would still be able to campaign for next month's European Parliament election and play a political role. The ruling does not mention any restrictions on holding political rallies or giving interviews. Following a definitive tax fraud conviction last year, Berlusconi was stripped of his seat … [Read more...] about Berlusconi’s Sentence: Work with the Elderly
Police investigated Gareth Thomas over former partner’s claims ex-rugby star gave him HIV
Gareth Thomas was investigated by police for allegedly infecting his former partner with HIV without disclosing he was positive with the virus. The Welsh rugby star, who is a leading advocate for the HIV community , behaved “deceptively” and “failed to take reasonable care” to ensure he did not pass on the disease, according to papers lodged in the High Court. Mr Thomas is being sued by Ian Baum, 59, who claims he only discovered the former Wales and Lions captain was HIV-positive when he found his antiviral medication. Mr Baum, a private carer who started an on-off relationship with Mr Thomas in 2013, alleges he then took an HIV test, which came back positive, and confronted his partner, who was “very repentant and apologetic”. He is suing the former player for a six-figure sum for serious physical and mental injury, including loss of life expectancy of six to eight years. Police investigated concluded in 2018 It has also emerged that Mr Thomas was the subject of an … [Read more...] about Police investigated Gareth Thomas over former partner’s claims ex-rugby star gave him HIV
