Warning notes are often a thing confined to horror films, the classic 'leave this place' mirror message has been interpreted in a bizarre way on the door step of one Reddit user's door. The note which simply says 'beware' was found accompanied by an odd array of items including coins totalling 9p, a plastic bottle cap, a rubber band, red string and a face mask. The person who received the disturbing note and selection of household items captioned the post: "Strange note left on door step, have I been cursed?" Reddit users were quick to share their opinions on the wacky note which managed to be threatening and confusing at the same time. One person asked: "Are the rubber band, thread and face mask part of the mystery or was they there already?" Another suggested replying to the author of the cryptic note: "Leave a note with more money and a bigger bottle cap that says: “No you." Whilst another joked: "Uno reverse card and a tenner." Another made the best of the bizarre … [Read more...] about Chilling note left on person’s doorstep with rubber band, face mask and string

Russia faces diplomatic and battlefield setbacks on Ukraine
Moscow has suffered another diplomatic setback in its war with Ukraine as Sweden joined Finland in deciding to seek Nato membership, while Ukraine’s president congratulated soldiers who reportedly pushed Russian forces back near the border. Russian forces pounded targets in the industrial heartland of eastern Ukraine known as the Donbas, and the death toll, already many thousands, kept climbing with the war set to enter its 12th week on Wednesday (local time). The eastern city of Sievierdonetsk came under heavy shelling that killed at least 10 people, said Serhiy Haidai, the governor of the Luhansk region. In the Donetsk region, Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Facebook that nine civilians were killed in shelling. Four policemen to face trial over Babar Ahmad ‘assault’
Four police officers will face trial for allegedly assaulting a terror suspect during his arrest, it has been confirmed. The quartet allegedly forced Babar Ahmad to kneel and demanded: ‘Where is your god now?’ They are to be charged with causing actual bodily harm. All four have now been put on restricted duties on London’s Metropolitan force. The Crown Prosecution Service said PCs Nigel Cowley, 32, John Donohue, Roderick James-Bowen, 39, and Mark Jones , 43, will appear before magistrates next month. Simon Clements, of the CPS, said it initially declined to press charges in 2004 as there was little prospect of a conviction. However, following Ahmad’s successful civil case, a further review of the evidence was undertaken and the opinion is now to charge the four officers. ‘Babar Ahmad was arrested by the officers on suspicion of terrorismoffences. Mr Ahmad suffered a number of injuries during that arrest, including heavy bruising to the head, neck, wrists and … [Read more...] about Four policemen to face trial over Babar Ahmad ‘assault’
Former tanning addict left with hole in face from skin cancer
A woman was left with a ‘golf ball-sized’ hole in her face after her love of suntanning led to her getting skin cancer. Misty Ovens, 44, used to regularly go on sunbeds to top up her tan, doing this on average once a week for ten years during her youth. She became far more vigilant protecting her skin following a breast cancer diagnosis in 2011 – but was still diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma last month. Doctors realised what was wrong after the mum-of-three went to them with a mark on her temple, which wouldn’t heal after she snagged it. It first appeared in December 2021, but Misty thought nothing of it at first until she accidentally caught it. She had to have surgery to remove the cancer, leaving a large red hole on her face that was stitched up ‘like Frankenstein’. Soon after the op she received the good news that the margins around the cancer site were clear. Misty is now keen to raise awareness of the importance of wearing and reapplying sunscreen. … [Read more...] about Former tanning addict left with hole in face from skin cancer
Torfaen education authority faces special measures
Published 22 March 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A sixth Welsh local education authority has fallen foul of school inspector Estyn, and faces special measures. The education watchdog says Torfaen council has not delivered enough improvement after a critical inspection in 2011. The Welsh government will now be asked to respond to the recommendation, which could see education responsibilities removed from the council. Torfaen said Estyn recognised it had improved, but the council apologised. Five other Welsh councils have previously been singled out by Estyn. In February, Monmouthshire and Merthyr Tydfil authorities faced a similar recommendation, following Anglesey, Blaenau Gwent and Pembrokeshire. The decision follows an inspection at Torfaen 18 months ago, where serious failings were highlighted. Estyn found that standards were well below what was … [Read more...] about Torfaen education authority faces special measures
Man faces debt collectors after adding wrong digit paying for £5 airport parking
A pensioner says he’s been threatened with debt collectors for making a simple typo while paying a £5 parking fee at Heathrow Airport. Pravin Kotecha, 66, made the error while dropping his wife off in November – mistyping a single digit while inputting his car registration. He was sure the online payment went through and says he received an email from parking firm APCOA confirming it had been accepted. But Pravin, from Thurmaston, Leicestershire, later travelled to India for a month and came home to find two notices from the firm telling him he hadn’t paid. He said the company eventually told him he would have to pay a fine to settle the debt and later revealed that the matter had been passed to a debt collector. Explaining how he checked the documents immediately and spotted his typing error, Pravin said: ‘I sent an email to them that day, when I realised my small mistake, to explain. ‘But they didn’t respond. I put it down to being so close to Christmas and New … [Read more...] about Man faces debt collectors after adding wrong digit paying for £5 airport parking
Torbay children’s services face £1.4m cut
Published 7 February 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Spending on children's services in Torbay could be cut by £1.4m in council budget savings of £10m next year. Cuts could also include £1.5m on services such as roads, libraries and museums, but adult social care could rise by £800,000. Torbay's Conservative Mayor Gordon Oliver is planning to cut £85,000 from the council-owned tourism board, the English Riviera Tourism Company (ERTC). Mr Oliver also wants to freeze council tax for the third year running. Parents at a Brixham nursery have been given until mid May to put together a plan to take it over after a decision was taken to close it in August due to falling numbers. Parent Kate Richards said closure would force parents to give up work. She said: "I hope the mayor will see that if it closes he is closing Brixham to young working families." … [Read more...] about Torbay children’s services face £1.4m cut
Two-Card Monte: Why Mastercard And Visa Rarely Shut Down Scammers Who Are Ripping Off Consumers
Paul Paolucci, the top cop for one of the world’s biggest credit card companies, sure had some interesting friends. One made a fortune fronting for pornography websites that needed access to Mastercard’s and Visa’s payment networks. Paolucci, who oversaw Mastercard’s merchant fraud control, was photographed cavorting around the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel with him and a group of women in white corset minidresses. A second was a Lamborghini-driving e-commerce mogul with whom Paolucci used to celebrate family holidays. The mogul ended up in prison for a financial crime he committed, in part, using Mastercard’s network. An executive at a famously corrupt European bank claimed to have dined with Paolucci and gotten his help evading Mastercard’s regulations. It was Paolucci’s job to make sure that the banks and companies using Mastercard’s network were playing by the rules. He bent those rules himself by getting close to the very kinds of high-risk businesses he was supposed to be … [Read more...] about Two-Card Monte: Why Mastercard And Visa Rarely Shut Down Scammers Who Are Ripping Off Consumers
