More info Various estimates of when people first arrived in the Americas have been published in recent years, varying from 20,000 to more than 30,000 years ago. In the second half of the 20th century, many North American archaeologists agreed on the idea that the Clovis people had been the first to reach the Americas. Their ancestors were thought to have crossed a land bridge linking Siberia to Alaska during the last ice age, but this land bridge — known as Beringia — later disappeared underwater as the ice slowly melted. Baby died after senior doctor failed to see mother face-to-face amid ‘catalogue of errors’
A newborn baby died after a senior doctor failed to see his mother face-to-face, an investigation has found. Officials found that maternity staff repeatedly missed chances to save the life of Giles Cooper-Hall, who died following a catalogue of errors in the maternity care of his mother at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The failings emerged just weeks after the Ockenden Report found that more than 200 babies died as a result of failings at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. The latest report highlighted how similar issues at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust meant staff missed multiple opportunities to save Giles. It revealed how his mother Ruth Cooper-Hall, then aged 37, was not seen face-to-face by a consultant when she went into labour in October last year, despite recommendations made in an interim Ockenden Report published nearly two years earlier. A Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) report into the incident, published on … [Read more...] about Baby died after senior doctor failed to see mother face-to-face amid ‘catalogue of errors’

Ford in Germany faces possible sales ban — reports
A judge in a Munich court ruled Friday that Ford Motor Company will not be able to sell or manufacture vehicles in Germany if it doesn't settle a dispute over microchips , according to German media. Ford is said to have 4G cellular chips built into its vehicles for which the company has not paid licensing fees, the business magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported. The ruling, which is subject to appeal, could be enforced in two weeks if Ford does not reach a settlement with the plaintiffs. What is the 4G patent case about? Ford is being sued by eight owners of 4G mobile communications patents, according to the report. The specific companies in question were not named, but the case was brought to the Munich court by Japanese intellectual property management company IP Bridge.
Bar manager left partially blind after ‘horrific’ attack with toxic substance
A bar manager who had a toxic substance thrown in his face has spoken out of his life-changing physical and mental injuries. When Tommy Powell arrived for his night shift at the Blue Bar Café in Eastbourne, he had no idea that only hours later paramedics would be scrambling to save his vision. Moments earlier, Moynes had been ‘politely’ escorted outside after starting some trouble. Describing how the skin around his eyes almost immediately blistered, Tommy told Metro.co.uk: ‘It all happened within the space of five minutes. ‘I felt this indescribable burning pain. My eyes and face were covered. It had also gone in my mouth and throat.’ Three months on from the attack, Tommy, 27, said he is struggling with severe PTSD, depression and anxiety caused by the incident. He says he often shuts himself off … [Read more...] about Bar manager left partially blind after ‘horrific’ attack with toxic substance

‘I went to war – and came back with a dog’
If you had to leave your home and all your worldly belongings in an instant to run for your life, as thousands of Ukrainians have, what would you grab? Money, your passport, some spare clothes? For many Ukrainian families, the one thing they could not leave behind was their pets. Pictures have emerged of refugees carrying cats, dogs and birds as they rush to safety . But those animals that were abandoned roam the streets in search of food and love. One of these much-loved pets found me, while I was reporting in Ukraine, and I could not leave that dog behind. This is my story of how I came back from war with a friend for life, one who helped me cope with the reality of a warzone. Before I left Islington for Ukraine, I could have never imagined the experience. The stories of destruction I found are so devastating that I struggle to comprehend how this is happening in the 21st century. Genocide. War crimes. Invasion. Yet, when entering Ukraine back in February, … [Read more...] about ‘I went to war – and came back with a dog’

A Russian soldier on trial for war crimes in Kyiv has said he only shot a civilian after being threatened by his comrades, as he begged for forgiveness from the victim’s wife. At a hearing in Kyiv on Thursday, Mr Shishimarin reportedly said he initially refused to shoot the civilian - tractor driver Oleksandr Shelipov - but was ordered to and threatened by another Russian soldier. Mr Shishimarin addressed the victim’s wife with a plea for forgiveness. “I admit my guilt. I understand you can’t forgive me. I ask forgiveness,” he said in the dock, according to a BBC reporter in the courtroom. He was confronted during the trial by the victim’s wife, Kateryna Shelipova, who said her husband was wearing civilian clothes and wanted answers as to why he was killed. “Tell me what did you feel when you killed my husband? Do you repent this … [Read more...] about Russian soldier who shot grandfather dead begs widow for forgiveness
Pugs are not ‘typical dogs’ because of their ‘lifetime of suffering’, says study
Pugs can no longer be considered a “typical dog” because extreme breeding has given them a long list of severe health issues . The desire for extreme, baby-like dogs with bulging eyes , folds of skin and flat faces has led to long-lasting and life-shortening health problems , which mean the animal is subjected to a “lifetime of suffering”. Dr Dan O’Neill, senior lecturer in companion animal epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, told The Telegraph that pugs lacked the “basic functions” expected of a canine. “We have dogs that are typical, like Labradors, where they have a long nose and a tail and are not that dissimilar to a wild dog,’’ he said. “Obviously, they have a different temperament but physically they just look like a wolf or a coyote or a dingo or a fox. “We’ve drafted a list of core body functions that any dog should expect to be able to do when it’s born and when it’s alive and these are very basic. “For example, they should be able to blink. It … [Read more...] about Pugs are not ‘typical dogs’ because of their ‘lifetime of suffering’, says study
