ALDI has topped the charts as Britain’s cheapest and favourite in-store supermarket, an annual Which? survey has revealed. Brits gave the German discount supermarket five stars for value for money - the only grocer in the country to be given this top rating. It beat rival Lidl, who came in close behind with four stars, as well as eight other stores. Tesco, Morrisons and Iceland came in joint third place with three stars, while Marks & Spencers, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Asda were all given two stars. Co-op came in last with one star. Over 3,000 Brits took part in the survey, and Aldi was also top of the leaderboard overall for its instore shopping experience. Matt Hancock defends failure to prioritise teachers and police in jab rollout
Matt Hancock has said the rollout of the UK vaccine in age order is the "fastest and simplest way" amid backlash over the lack of priority for teachers and police. The health secretary defended plans for the next phase of the Government's Covid response, due to start in April, in which those aged 40-49 will be offered the jab first. The view of the Government and its advisers was that "the right thing to do, the moral thing to do is to make sure that we save the most lives," Hancock said. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has said that vaccination in order of age remains the speediest way to cut deaths. Targeting certain professions would be complicated and may slow down the process, the JCVI has advised. Care homes can refuse to hire staff who won't accept the coronavirus vaccine, the Justice Secretary confirmed today. Robert Buckland said providers were legally allowed to make vaccination a condition of employment as long as they could provide a 'clear rationale'. He added the Government would not enforce 'no jab, no job' policies on care home workers, but added that it would not prevent employers blocking future contracts for those who refuse the vaccine. All care home staff staff and residents have been offered their first jab, yet more than a quarter (28.5 per cent) have refused to take it. Uptake is worst in London, where only 54.8 per cent of eligible staff in older care homes have had a jab.
