Landlord of haunted pub creeped out as ‘ghost of drowned teen’ pushes pint off table
A landlord of a "haunted" pub has been left feeling unsettled after he watched a pint glass get pushed off a table and smash without anyone touching it - which paranormal investigators believe is the work of a teenage ghost . Scott Dawson caught the "creepy" footage on his CCTV camera at the Ring O Bells pub in Kendal, Cumbria, just before 8:30 pm on June 29, and claimed it isn't the first spooky incident to have taken place in the pub. The bizarre footage shows a punter ordering two pints at the bar and placing one on a table while he takes his dog outside. Once no one is looking, the pint glass seems to move towards the edge on its own , before startling customers as it smashes on a chair. The pub seems innocent from the outside ( Image: Kennedy News and Media) Get the news you want straight to your inbox. Sign up for a Mirror newsletter here. Photo: Courtesy of the Rodgers-Beaty-Guettel family In the four years between her explosive separation from Jerry Beaty in 1957 and her Mexican wedding to Henry Guettel in 1961, Mary Rodgers (1931–2014) composed the music for Once Upon a Mattress, ushered the show to Broadway and London, assisted Leonard Bernstein on his Young People’s Concerts, and wrote songs for everyone from Bing Crosby to Captain Kangaroo. All this while raising three young children and juggling many unlikely husband prospects, including the producer Hal Prince; a married editor she called Boston Jack; her Mattress lyricist, Marshall Barer, who was gay; and a CIA operative named Cord Meyer. Finally, there was the man she had met and fallen hard for at Oscar Hammerstein’s farm when she was barely a teenager: Stephen Sondheim. Would their affection take the turn they’d described in a song they … [Read more...] about A Trial Marriage to Stephen Sondheim
The Kite Runner: Broadway show first to adopt mask-only nights
By Steven McIntosh Published 41 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The Kite Runner has become the first show on Broadway to require audiences to wear masks at certain performances. The move is particularly notable as the show's weekly mask-only night will be on Fridays - one of the most popular nights in New York's theatre district. Fans who are disabled or have other health vulnerabilities have long called for theatres to host mask-only nights. But the major theatres in London's West End have yet to introduce such a scheme. 'Audience demand' In England and Wales, the mask mandate was lifted in January, in line with a significant fall in Covid cases and deaths following the rollout of the vaccine. As a result, it has become increasingly rare in recent months to see audience members wearing facemasks at the vast majority of West End … [Read more...] about The Kite Runner: Broadway show first to adopt mask-only nights
What’s it really like to work at McDonald’s?
By Justin Parkinson Published 15 April 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing In 1955 the first McDonald's franchise restaurant opened in the US. Now it is the world's biggest fast food chain, employing 1.9 million people. The word "McJob" has become a term of derision, but what's it like to actually work there? "Hello, can I help you?" asks the smiling young woman behind the counter. Within about 20 seconds of receiving the order, an Egg and Sausage McMuffin is on the counter. The woman smiles again and moves on to the next customer. The restaurant's only part-full but the serving area is still busy. That's the way McDonald's likes it. Staff are set time targets for service. Efficiency and profit margins are key. It's fair to say that, in the 60 years since the first franchised McDonald's restaurant opened, portrayals of its workplaces have not been universally … [Read more...] about What’s it really like to work at McDonald’s?

France whale: Hopes fading for lost mammal stuck in River Seine
By Leo Sands & George Wright Published 2 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing French rescuers desperately trying to save a beluga whale trapped in the River Seine say there is little hope it will survive. Rescuers had hoped to help the lost whale regain its appetite and the energy needed to return to sea. The visibly malnourished mammal was first spotted in the river on Tuesday, around 70km (44 miles) north of Paris. After failed attempts to encourage it to swim out, rescuers are pessimistic about its chances of survival. So far rescuers have offered up frozen herring and live trout for the four-metre whale to eat, but the animal does not appear to have accepted either. Authorities have considered injecting the stranded animal with vitamins to stimulate its appetite and help it to make the long 160km (100 mile) return journey back down the river … [Read more...] about France whale: Hopes fading for lost mammal stuck in River Seine
Cat parasite found in Arctic Beluga
By Jonathan Amos Published 14 February 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The cat parasite Toxoplasma gondii , which can cause blindness in people, has been identified in Beluga in the western Arctic. The discovery by University of British Columbia scientists has prompted a health advisory to Inuit people in the region who eat the whale's meat. Researchers say it is an example of how the warming of the Arctic is allowing the freer movement of pathogens. Icier conditions in the past acted as an obstruction to infectious agents. “Ice is a significant ecological barrier and it influences the way in which pathogens can be transmitted in nature and your risk of exposure,” said molecular parasitologist Michael Grigg. “What we’re finding with the changes ongoing in the Arctic is that we’re getting new pathogens emerging to cause diseases in the region … [Read more...] about Cat parasite found in Arctic Beluga
