According to a global food waste index released on Thursday, some 931 million tons of food waste were generated across the world in 2019. The report, published by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and UK charity WRAP, equates that to 17% of all food available to consumers. At 61%, the majority was created in households. The retail and food service sectors performed better, generating 13% and 26% respectively. The index does not factor in food loss which differs from food waste in that it occurs during production, storage or processing and never reaches the consumer. The National People's Congress, China's annual parliamentary event , opens Friday in Beijing. For the second straight year, it will be a mostly virtual event because of the coronavirus pandemic. Although the NPC is China's main legislature, the Communist Party ensures that important decisions are made long before any proposals reach the body. The party sometimes uses the NPC to reveal major policy and personnel changes. The outlook for the economy and Hong Kong's future, among others, will be under discussion at the gathering, which lasts 10 to 14 days. The Moderna Covid-19 vaccine is causing a small percentage of people to develop patches of inflamed skin and rashes around the injection site, up to 11 days after vaccination. Doctors from the US have penned an article outlining the unusual dermatological reaction to the jab.
