Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?

July 5, 2022 by www.euronews.com

The British opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer has said there is no going back on Brexit, in a speech on Monday night. Instead, he offered a new slogan as part of a drive to ensure Britain thrives: "Make Brexit Work". "There are some who say 'we don’t need to make Brexit work — we need to reverse it'," the Labour leader told the Centre for European Reform (CER) . "I couldn’t disagree more." "Let me be very clear. Under Labour, Britain will not go back into the EU. We will not be joining the single market. We will not be joining a customs union." It represents a major policy shift for Starmer — who in the run-up to Brexit called for a deal to be put to a second referendum, and lauded the benefits of the free movement of workers, now consigned to the past. It also further distances the country's current direction from the fiery debates and deadlock in the aftermath of the 2016 referendum, with the two largest parties firmly wedded to the UK's departure from the … [Read more...] about Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A woman posted a now-viral video showing the remnants of her beach bag that she said was torched by the sun on a hot day in Greece. Eva Bacchoo posted the clip on her TikTok account @evabacchoo on June 24, and it has since amassed more than one million views. "Just to give you a rough idea of how hot it currently is in Crete, my bag just set itself on fire," Bacchoo said. According to California Casualty, an insurance company, an "ordinary fire" involves paper, wood, clothing, trash or plastic. "This type of fire may occur if you knock over a candle or get a spark from the fireplace," a piece published by the organization stated. "Unlike the other fires, these do respond well to water." If a fire extinguisher is not readily available, the organization recommended filling a bucket with water and dousing the flames. Bacchoo showed what her bag looked like after she managed to extinguish it. "I started smelling burning and I thought, 'Oh, weird,'" she said. "I turned … [Read more...] about Woman’s bag allegedly catches on fire in Greece due to scorching sun

Cancer patients and diabetics in Mariupol ‘dying from medicine shortage’

July 5, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Russian forces are cutting off the supply of life-saving drugs into the already battered city of Mariupol, officials have said. Mayor Vadym Boychenko said in a Telegram post yesterday that people ‘are at risk and cannot wait for the occupiers to deliver medicines’. The Mariupol City Council said locals in the southern port city are dying from a ‘shortage of drugs for cancer patients, people with diabetes , tuberculosis and problems with the thyroid gland’. It comes after Vladimir Putin’s forces subjected the city to a brutal Medieval-style siege for two months, which saw food, water and other vital supplies cut off. Relentless bombardment of infrastructure meant civilians routinely suffered internet blackouts, making them even more isolated from the outside world. Earlier in the invasion, Russia was accused of violating ceasefire agreements allowing safe exit routes for residents by shelling so-called humanitarian corridors. Putin’s forces declared victory … [Read more...] about Cancer patients and diabetics in Mariupol ‘dying from medicine shortage’

April 25, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

For more than 30 seconds, he believed that he had just summited the Formula 1 world – only to have that notion cruelly ripped away. Felipe Massa went from dreamland to the depths of despair in such a short space of time. But then came the moment which secured his place in the hearts of F1 fans forever, as he accepted the most difficult of defeats with humility and dignity in front of the people who adored him most in the world. It was in 2008 that Massa had the best shot he would ever have to become the champion. In his sixth full season in the sport and third with Ferrari , he was finally ready to make a real bid for the prize he had been dreaming about ever since he first sat in a go-kart. The stage couldn't have been any more ideal, even if the job was a tough one. In front of his own people, at the Brazilian Grand Prix finale, the Interlagos circuit the he had grown up living just a couple of hours away from was the staging ground for his assault. His job was … [Read more...] about F1 star emerged from Michael Schumacher’s shadow to almost stop Lewis Hamilton dominance
