California gym owner backtracks on plan to defy coronavirus lockdown by reopening, blames “unconstitutional harassment”

The gyms were closed as part of California Gov. Gavin Newsom e's order enacted on March 19 to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. "The last few months have undoubtedly been some of the hardest in our lifetimes," the letter reads. Dawn said: ‘We have over 200 goats with us including lots of little ones. ‘Most have names and I’ve got individual collars with all their name on and our telephone numbers. ‘They are basically lawn mowers, however, their main purpose is to work in large groups and do conservation grazing for the council and national trust at the end of summer. ‘The goats eat through all the weeds and bramble to clear pathways – they’re great for getting into the smaller spaces where you can’t send in tractors, heavy … [Read more...] about Family start unique gardening business where people can hire out goats as lawn mowers
What do you want to see in the Budget this year?
STUFF Grant Robertson told a business breakfast he would not be taking his foot off the gas to ignore long-term challenges. Finance Minister Grant Robertson will reveal this year’s Budget on Thursday. Some say the time is right for some change, as the country navigates a high rate of inflation, reopening borders and a pressured labour market. We asked: What do you hope to see this year? Kirk Hope, chief executive, Business NZ: The key issue for businesses remains skill shortages. The Government can address that issue by having well-established clear policy on immigration that enables businesses to attract people to NZ. This issue is bigger than a single year or even multi-year Budget because it is impacting not only the private sector but also the Government itself as it deploys expenditure in critical areas such as infrastructure development, and this issue is also spilling over into the provision of essential public services such as health. Greg Harford, chief … [Read more...] about What do you want to see in the Budget this year?
How to get NZ’s cost of living down
Sam Stubbs is chief executive of KiwiSaver fund Simplicity and a regular opinion contributor. OPINION: Anyone who has been to a supermarket , petrol station or taken out a mortgage lately will be painfully aware of how high the cost of living is here. A block of cheese can be twice the price of Australia and mortgage rates are on average 20% higher. On the positive side, our long term growth has been higher than most developed countries, so we have more money to spend. But a lot of the increase in our cost of living has been because we are a small country, dominated by a few companies operating as effective duopolies or oligopolies. Think Foodstuffs and Countdown , Carters and Fletchers , and the big four banks. Fortunately, things are about to change, and I suspect in a very big way over time. Ramraided suburbs say bollards aren’t the answer: ‘We’re not a prison town’
Abigail Dougherty/Stuff Following a heavy spate of ramraids, a public meeting has been held to discuss what the next steps will be to tackle the incidents. “Building a fortress” isn’t the way to address a spike in ramraids, a community leader says. Bollards have been tipped as the answer to the surge in crime, which is typically committed by young people. But Scott Milne, the chairperson of Ōrākei Local Board in east Auckland, said bollards did not solve the problem – nor did they paint an ideal future of the community’s future. “While I appreciate in certain circumstances bollards are a good idea, we don't want the place to look like a prison town with roller doors and bollards everywhere,” Milne said. Record wage growth sparks inflation fears as minister expresses ‘surprise’ at Bailey food warning
Andrew Bailey has raised ministers' eyebrows for warning of "apocalyptic" food shortages as record wage growth raises fears that a dangerous inflationary spiral is taking hold in the economy. Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, expressed “surprise” at the Bank of England Governor's comments about rising costs caused by the war in Ukraine blocking exports of wheat and cooking oils. “I was surprised to see that particular turn of phrase, I have to say,” Mr Lewis told BBC Breakfast. “But the Bank of England is independent, they will have their view of their assessment, their economic view of where things are and where things are going.” It came as new data from the Office for National Statistics showed pay packets jumped almost 10pc in March, helping workers keep up with the cost of living, but also risking making inflation worse. In February, Mr Bailey urged workers not to ask for a big pay rise this year , warning that "moderation" of wage rises was needed to … [Read more...] about Record wage growth sparks inflation fears as minister expresses ‘surprise’ at Bailey food warning

McDonalds takes $1.4bn hit from closing its 850 Russian outlets
McDonald’s is pulling out of Russia after more than 30 years of selling milkshakes and hamburgers in the country, taking a $1.4bn (£1.1bn) hit from the decision. The fast-food giant is seeking to sell its operations, including 850 restaurants with 62,000 employees. It is one of the most high profile retreats by a Western firm since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. McDonald's temporarily halted its business in Russia in March but today said it will permanently leave. The company opened its first restaurant in Moscow in 1990, attracting queues of an estimated 30,000 people in Pushkin Square in what came to be seen as a defining moment for the triumph of capitalism after the Cold War. It said that holding onto its business in Russia was “no longer tenable, nor is it consistent with McDonald’s values” despite predicting an up to $1.4bn (£1.1bn) financial blow from pulling out. It plans to offload its entire portfolio of restaurants to a local buyer and remove the … [Read more...] about McDonalds takes $1.4bn hit from closing its 850 Russian outlets
Storm Dennis: Review of Wales’ floods of past two years
Published 44 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Storm Dennis An independent review into the Welsh floods of 2020 and 2021, including the aftermath of Storm Dennis, has been launched. The Welsh government has asked barrister Prof Elwen Evans to see what can be learned from the events. It will consider evidence gathered from previous reports. The review is part of the Welsh government's co-operation deal with Plaid Cymru, which said people remain "traumatised" by what took place. But the Tories questioned the scope of the review, saying it would prefer an inquiry rather than "a review of existing reports". Flooding in February 2020 overwhelmed defences and saw communities that had not seen flooding for decades inundated with water.
