MEET the Irish trader whose money-spinning ways earned him his own chapter in a best-selling book. Dubliner Ronan Ryan is President of IEX trading in New York’s World Trade Centre and a key character in Michael Lewis’ Flash Boys: A Wall St Revolt. Ronan’s company uses superfast software to buy and sell stocks in less than a second, trading billions every day. Now he’s popped up in a new RTE show, Irish in Wonderland, which looks at the Irish people serving the mega-rich. Speaking on the show he said: “When the book came out and I saw the table of contents and it’s like ‘Ronan’s Problem,’ it was pretty, like, ‘oh no.’ “I went home that night and I was sort of like Willy Wonka with the golden ticket. “I ran past my wife and went in and started reading it, I turned right — of course — to my chapter and the first line had me like a Irish famine survivor or something like that. ‘I was like, … [Read more...] about Meet the top trader among the Irish making it big in New York
In her book, Hillary Clinton says the news media has not done enough soul-searching about its role in her loss. Her argument boils down to this: too much firepower was aimed at her emails, part of a long pattern of unfair scandal mongering over the years. Unfair press coverage fueled the “lock her up” frenzy and created doubts in the minds of some undecided voters. Conversely, there was way too little scrutiny of Donald Trump and too much reactive coverage of his every tweet and rally. He was clickbait and ratings manna for the news media. The New York Times bears the brunt of her criticisms. The New York Times never stacked the deck against Hillary Clinton. It just didn’t happen At an excellent event sponsored by the Texas Tribune, a non-profit news organization, I spent three days in Austin recently with many of the most prominent political reporters and editors in the country, examining the performance of the press in the 2016 election. As the person … [Read more...] about The New York Times had an anti-Hillary Clinton agenda? That’s untrue
The most head-scratching moment of New York fashion week was not part of the official schedule. It happened more than 200 miles away from the catwalks, in fact, in Washington DC, when Melania Trump disembarked from Marine One on Sunday wearing a red Calvin Klein shirt with beige epaulettes and a sharply pointed collar. This was a strange occurrence, for anyone who knows their fashion references, because Trump’s shirt was recognisably part of Belgian designer Raf Simons’s first collection for Calvin Klein. Simons is the sort of brainy, arty designer beloved by the “liberal elite” that the president professes to hate. His take on the US megabrand has mined the tropes of Americana – prairie quilts, cowboy boots, the star-spangled banner – in what has been interpreted by critics as an attempt to reclaim the American dream from the political right. Trump probably wasn’t trying to make a complex political statement when she wore the $695 (£524) … [Read more...] about From Melania Trump to American nightmares – what caused a stir at New York fashion week?
Over the last few years, Jim Carrey stopped making headlines for appearing on screen, the focus instead being on the actor’s personal life. During New York Fashion Week, Carrey — best known for roles in The Mask, Ace Ventura, and Liar Liar — made a rare public appearance. Walking down the red carpet, an interviewer for E! stopped the camera-shy actor to discuss the event, Carrey venting some existential issues. “There’s no meaning to any of this,” he told the reporter. “I just wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join, and here I am. You've got to admit, this is completely meaningless.” While slightly baffled, the reporter responded by asking about the icons the event was celebrating, to which the comedian/painter responded: “Celebrating icons? Oh boy, that is just the lowest aiming possibility that we could come up with. Icons. Do you believe in icons? I believe in personalities. I … [Read more...] about Jim Carrey gives ‘baffling’ interview at New York Fashion Week
KIM Kardashian ensured she was the centre of attention on Friday night as she paraded her famous figure in a racy outfit. The reality star is one of the many famous faces in New York city for fashion week and the star put on a typically daring sartorial display as she left her hotel. The newly-blonde star left little to the imagination as she teamed a small black crop top with sheer black trousers. She completed her daring look with a black blazer and perspex heels while she held onto a small black clutch bag. Her dyed locks were lengthened with luxury extensions while her face was covered in flawlessly applied make-up. Kim was pictured supporting her younger sister Kendall Jenner at the Daily Front Row's Fashion Media Awards, where the 21-year-old was named Fashion Icon of the Decade. The model also wore an all-black ensemble, sporting an off-the-shoulder gown with a short tulle skirt and long train. The sisters posed together at the ceremony, with Kendall grinning from ear to ear as … [Read more...] about Kim Kardashian shows off her famous curves in see-through trousers and black thong before switching to stunning silver gown in New York
KIM Kardashian looked sensational as she went braless and flashed her incredible abs in a barely-there black dress on night out in New York. The newly-blonde reality star's gym-honed body looked better than ever as she hit the town in the Big Apple. The mum-of-two was pictured wearing an outfit which seemed to be designed to help her break the Internet once again. The daring dress boosted her cleavage and left her toned tummy on display with two large slashes across her navel. She was leaving the Park Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and heading to an event at the Public Hotel. Her mum Kris Jenner was there too, and the family matriarch wrapped up warm in a heavy coat. Kim braved the autumn chill by leaving her coat at home. Her hair was scraped back off her face, and she was spotted getting her locks primped on the pavement outside. Kim was snapped on the arm of famous fashion photographer Mert Alas. The event she was heading to was the launch of Mert's new book with his photography … [Read more...] about Kim Kardashian looks sensational as she flashes her incredible abs in a barely-there black dress to party with sister Kendall Jenner on night out in New York
THE Victoria’s Secret Angels were out in force last night as they attended a book launch. Showing that a little black dress is always a winner, Candice Swanepoel, Doutzen Kroes and Adriana Lima led the way at the star-studded event for Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott’s new book. Candice turned heads as she strutted into the venue in New York wearing a pair of thigh high boots that made her already long legs look endless. She teamed the sexy boots with an iridescent minidress that showed off her model figure perfectly. The 28-year-old completed her look by wearing her hair off her face in a dramatic ponytail. Doutzen followed closely behind wearing an off the shoulder black jacket style dress. The skimpy number revealed her long and slender pins, while the 32-year-old wore her hair in a relaxed tousled side parting. Adriana meanwhile also opted for black and picked a frock with an asymmetrical hemline and one sleeve. The 36-year-old finished off her glamorous look with a dash … [Read more...] about Candice Swanepoel, Doutzen Kroes and Adriana Lima show off their incredible legs in black mini dresses as they lead the model arrivals at New York book event
Is New York Fashion Week, which officially began on Thursday but actually began Wednesday (thank you, Tom Ford), a dead duck? Is it a sinking ship, in the soup, up the creek? Is it – gasp! – over? Not “over” in the literal sense, of course. There are more than 130 shows on the schedule. But “over” in the substantive sense. Over as a power player in a global system that puts a premium on showcasing clothes that redefine how women present themselves. Over as we know it. Forget whether or not suits are back; this is the existential question underpinning the fashion season. The debate has been raging all summer, ever since Rodarte and Proenza Schouler decamped to Paris for couture in July, and Thom Browne announced he would move to Paris and show during ready-to-wear, and then Joseph Altuzarra said “me too”, and even Lacoste said it was likewise heading back to its city of birth, and then Narciso Rodriguez cancelled his show in favour … [Read more...] about Is it New York Fashion Week? New York state authorities have threatened to sue Donald Trump if he ends the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which is intended to protect those brought into the US illegally while they were minors from deportation. There are approximately 800,000 people - so-called 'Dreamers' - who have benefited from DACA in the US since its beginning in 2012 under the Obama administration. The programme allows Dreamers to obtain work permits as well. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement that if the President ends the programme it would be "cruel, gratuitous, and devastating to tens of thousands of New Yorkers—and I will sue to protect them." “Dreamers are Americans in every way. They played by the rules. They pay their taxes. And they've earned the right to stay in the only home they have ever known," he noted. Mr Schneiderman is also working with Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller to assist in the … [Read more...] about New York threatens to sue Trump if he ends ‘Dreamers’ programme for undocumented immigrant children
The thing about an international game played just outside of a diverse city like New York is, it can be hard to tell who the home team is — even if that team happens to be the United States national team. As the Red Bull Arena here — just across the Hudson river from Manhattan — began to fill up Friday night for the World Cup qualifying match between the US and Costa Rica, a battle to dominate the stadium with voices took shape. And, Costa Rican fans there, many of whom live nearby in New Jersey or New York, put up a good fight. “I’m rooting for the US,” Zella, a 14-year-old girl of Costa Rican descent who lives in Atlantic City, New Jersey, said. Her step-father, though? Not so keen with her chosen affiliation. “He’s a little upset,” Zella said, before trailing off. “But…” After Costa Rica’s Marco Urena scored the first goal of the match in the first half, the Costa Rican fans made the arena … [Read more...] about At US-Costa Rica qualifier, fans compete to claim home field advantage outside New York City
A federal judge has tossed out a defamation lawsuit by Sarah Palin against The New York Times, saying the former Alaska governor failed to show the newspaper knew it was publishing false statements in an editorial before quickly correcting them. The written ruling by Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan said the lawsuit seeking unspecified damages “fails on its face to adequately allege actual malice.” The decision came weeks after the onetime Republican vice presidential nominee sued over an editorial titled “America's Lethal Politics.” It was published in June after a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers in Virginia, wounding US Representative Steve Scalise. The Times' editorial was corrected twice when readers complained that it appeared to blame a political action committee belonging to Ms Palin, a former Republican vice presidential candidate, for “political incitement” after it distributed a map depicting Democratic … [Read more...] about Sarah Palin just tried to sue the New York Times and failed
A young adult novel has been removed from the No 1 position on the New York Times bestseller lists, after detective work worthy of Nancy Drew by YA writers on Twitter uncovered a trail of strategic preorders being placed in particular US bookshops. Lani Sarem’s Handbook for Mortals is about “a free-spirited young woman, from a long dynasty of tarot-card readers, fortunetellers, and practitioners of magick [who] travels to Las Vegas and uses supernatural powers to become part of a premiere magic show”. It took the top spot on the New York Times young adult bestseller list this week, ahead of Angie Thomas’s novel The Hate U Give. Industry monitor Nielsen Bookscan recorded 18,597 sales of Handbook for Mortals in one weekend. But author Phil Stamper began to ask questions, pointing out that the book’s publisher was only launched a month earlier and that the novel was listed as out of stock on Amazon. “A book that no one has heard of except for the two … [Read more...] about New York Times pulls YA novel from bestseller list after reports of fake sales
Will the US Open finally get a Federer vs Nadal match? While all the other grand slams have enjoyed finals between the two great rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the US Open has never hosted so much as a match between the two. It's a quirk that irritates the Flushing Meadows crowd, who are desperate to see the two greats go head to head. Friday's draw will tell us whether they are scheduled to meet in either the semi or final, but either way the odds look good for the pair to meet in New York at last. Between them, they have scooped up all three of the majors so far this year, and Nadal goes into the tournament as the world No 1 - even though he has failed to get beyond the quarter-final in any of his last three events. The key for the Spaniard will be how he can adapt his dominant clay-court game to the faster, lower-bouncing hard courts (more on that subject here). Federer meanwhile pulled out of last week's Cincinnati Masters after being … [Read more...] about US Open talking points: Will New York finally see Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal, what chance an Andy Murray and Johanna Konta double?
As the moon slowly turned the sun over New York City into a crescent — creeping toward a partial eclipse— the crowd at the American Museum of Natural History occasionally burst into premature applause. Staring up through silver-lensed glasses made special to block direct sunlight, families and neighbours had gathered on a stone terrace together outside the American Museum of Natural History to wonder at the magnificence of the universe. But the universe — or at least the sky above Manhattan — chose to be a bit mischievous, sporadically blocking the celestial sight with cloud cover, tricking the craned necks below that the eclipse had finally come. It didn’t matter, though. The eclipse was being billed as a once-in-a-lifetime event. Why not get your money’s worth in, applause-wise? “I haven’t experienced an eclipse in a very long time,” Greg Packer, a retired highway worker, told The Independent. Mr Packer, 53, rushed around … [Read more...] about Solar eclipse lovers from all over New York pause their busy days to marvel at celestial wonder
Donald Trump reportedly made up a story about an upmarket New York restaurant during a national security meeting and all the details were false. Mr Trump told his top security advisers an anecdote about the renovation of the Manhattan speakeasy 21 Club but both the former owner and the former CEO of the restaurant have denied the story. The US President reportedly told the story during a meeting at the White House with his advisers, when he suggested firing some of his top military commanders for not winning the war in Afghanistan. To emphasise his point about how long it was taking to craft a new US strategy in Afghanistan, he compared the situation to the renovation of the Club 21 during the 1980s, which is one of his regular spots, NBC previously reported. Officials in the meeting said he told generals how the elite restaurant closed for a year and hired an expensive consultant to plan for … [Read more...] about Trump used an anecdote about a high end New York club. Chelsea Manning, the US soldier who was jailed for providing documents to WikiLeaks, joined tens of thousands of revellers at the gay pride parade in New York on Sunday. Tens of thousands of people waving rainbow flags lined streets for the parades in coast-to-coast events that took both celebratory and political tones, the latter a reaction to what some see as new threats to gay rights in the Trump era. At the jam-packed New York City parade, a few attendees wore "Make America Gay Again" hats, while one group walking silently in the parade wore "Black Lives Matter" shirts as they held up signs with a fist and with a rainbow background, a symbol for gay pride. Manning was seen smiling on the American Civil Liberties Union float during the New York event as she celebrated her first pride as a free woman.
