Picture: УАСГ Sofia. It is high time for Bulgarian politicians to start thinking about European issues, too, in the remaining months before the European elections, political analyst Prof. Mihail Konstantinov said in a commentary for Focus Radio. According to him, so far the messages are mainly linked to domestic politics. “GERB places an emphasis on sustainable development, BSP criticises the government. Bulgarian politicians think they show responsibility about the upcoming elections to the European Parliament, but we actually see that they are focused entirely on domestic issues although our representatives in the European Parliament will have to deal both with common European problems and problems concerning Bulgaria,” Prof. Konstantinov said, recalling the conflict situations over the “Macron” plan where the interests of Bulgaria and Europe were not in the same direction. “I expect a really solid debate on the issues of … [Read more...] about Mihail Konstantinov, analyst: In the remaining time before European elections politicians should also think about European issues
Sergei Stanishev may be the leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES), but his authority in his home country Bulgaria is under pressure. Stanishev was Prime Minister when Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007. He was also the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) from 2001 to 2014, and has led the President of PES since 2011. No other Bulgarian has held such a high position in a European political family. But despite these credentials, he will not lead the BSP list at the European elections. On Sunday (17 March) Stanishev lost a secret vote to determine the list leader to journalist Elena Yoncheva, his former partner in the period when he was Prime Minister. After four hours of debates the BSP National Council elected Yoncheva to lead the list with 95 votes, while Stanishev obtained 75. Yoncheva gained popularity as a journalist reporting from battlefields such as Afghanistan or Iraq. Lately, she became MP and exposed corruption involving politicians from the GERB party … [Read more...] about Stanishev loses leadership of European elections list to former partner
The EU will terminate Britain's membership of the bloc on 1 July if the country does not take part in the European elections scheduled for 23-26 May, according to a document seen by the Financial Times. Nathalie Loiseau has dismissed the idea 19 times, by her own count, but it turns out France's Europe minister will run to lead Emmanuel Macron's list in the upcoming European election. Loiseau made the announcement while facing off against French far-right leader Marine Le Pen in a televised debate late Thursday night. The debate — and the likely orchestrated announcement — threw into stark relief the fault line Macron has been drawing ahead of the election: European voters have a choice between his constructive, pro-EU camp, and the doomsday scenario of a far-right, nationalist dismantling of the European project. Loiseau's literal 11th hour announcement — made at 11:21 p.m. — ends a month of speculation, and is very unlikely to have been made without the approval of the president himself, who is the final arbiter of all major decisions in his political movement, La République En Marche (LREM). According to reports, Macron has recently taken note … [Read more...] about French Europe minister declares herself Macron’s European election champion
