When Sir Alex Ferguson took over as Manchester United manager in 1986, he set himself the challenge of “knocking Liverpool off their perch.” At the time of his appointment the Reds were England’s dominant force, the reigning First Division and FA Cup holders having won the double the previous year. The Scot would have to wait four years for his first piece of silverware at Old Trafford - an FA Cup win in 1990. That same season saw Liverpool clinch their 18th and, to date, most recent league title. When they travelled to United in March 1990 on their way to winning the Championship, they sat 21 points clear of Ferguson’s side at the top of the table. A John Barnes double saw that advantage extended to 24 points. However, in the years that followed Ferguson got his wish. From Premier League titles to the Champions League, Manchester United also lifted numerous FA Cups and League Cups as well as Community Shields, the European Cup Winners' Cup, European Super Cup … [Read more...] about How Liverpool knocked Manchester United off their perch

Uefa have pledged to tackle the issue of excessive away ticket prices by introducing a cap for teams competing in the Champions League and Europa League. In last season's Champions League, Manchester United were furious after Sevilla charged travelling fans £89 a ticket for the knockout stage tie at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. After the Spanish club refused to lower their prices, United responded by charging the same amount for the return leg at Old Trafford. In September, Football Supporters Europe (FSE) asked Uefa to review the regulations that allowed clubs to charge exorbitant amounts for away tickets. Uefa president Alexander Ceferin has now responded, suggesting a cap on prices could be the way forward in continental competition. “We know about the problem,” Ceferin said. “It would be good to do something to cap prices. … [Read more...] about Uefa to cap away ticket prices in Champions League and Europa League

There was a depressingly familiar feeling around Manchester United last week.Anticipation gave way to frustration as Jose Mourinho's side stumbled their way to a 1-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League, a win only achieved thanks to Marouane Fellaini's 91st-minute strike. In the TV studio afterwards, condemnation from former United midfielder Paul Scholes was swift."Awful," he said.Half an hour later, Mourinho responded. He told his "lovers" the result - and United's subsequent qualification for the last 16 - had maintained his 100% record of getting out of the group stage, a run that stretches across 14 seasons and includes spells with Porto, Chelsea, Inter … [Read more...] about Manchester United: Is Jose Mourinho getting a fair deal?
United were preparing for the visit of Manchester City a year ago with their title aspirations, technically, still alive. On Wednesday, Jose Mourinho's side welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford, knowing anything less than a win will seriously dent their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League. It has been quite a fall. Yes, there are still five months left of the campaign, but United just do not look capable of going on a run at the moment. They have yet to win three league games in a row this season and have kept just two clean sheets; United managed both of those feats by August last year. United have repeatedly come unstuck against sides they are expected to beat - Brighton, Wolves, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Southampton - and narrowly saw off Newcastle and Bournemouth. Nothing about this season has been comfortable - and Mourinho set the tone with his comments in the summer. The Portuguese warned that United faced a 'difficult season' if his squad was not strengthened … [Read more...] about Manchester United are facing an unthinkable prospect vs Arsenal
