V olodymyr Zelensky said on Monday night Russia's large-scale offensive in the eastern Donbas region has begun. Fighting has intensified in eastern Ukraine after Russia withdrew troops from the region around the capital Kyiv and refocused its efforts on the Donbas region that pro-Moscow separatists have partly controlled since 2014. Ukraine's president said: "We can now confirm that Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbas, which they have been preparing for a long time. A large part of the Russian army is now dedicated to this offensive. "No matter how many Russian soldiers are brought here, we will fight. We will defend ourselves." Shortly before Mr Zelensky's address, the regional governor of eastern Lugansk Serhiy Haidai also announced the beginning of Russia's much-anticipated attack. "It's hell. The offensive has begun, the one we've been talking about for weeks. There's constant fighting in Rubizhne and Popasna, fighting in other peaceful cities," he … [Read more...] about We will fight, says Volodymyr Zelensky as Russian begins offensive in eastern Ukraine

How Boris should take on the EU and fix the Northern Ireland Protocol
On a dark Sunday afternoon in December 2017, I received a call from Theresa May, the then prime minister. She told me that she had agreed a new form of words in negotiations over the Brexit deal with the EU that “might cause me some concern”. She was right. The words amounted to an agreement to allow “full regulatory alignment” between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Put to one side the fact that she had undertaken these discussions without notifying me – her Brexit Secretary – at all. The actual consequences of the agreement were predictably disastrous. The words started a process that led to my resignation, but much more importantly led to the situation that we face today, with the Good Friday Agreement and the integrity of the Brexit deal both at risk. Frankly, these risks were immediately obvious. Indeed, it was clear from the nervous behaviour of No 10 the next day that they thought that I might well resign on the spot. I considered it, but decided to make a … [Read more...] about How Boris should take on the EU and fix the Northern Ireland Protocol

If the EU is stupid enough to retaliate over the NI Protocol, it will mainly be hurting itself
We must refrain from unilateral actions that would undermine our unity and our Western partnership against Russian aggression,” said Roberta Metsola, the new President of the European Parliament. And she was spot on – though not in the way she intended. The Maltese Christian Democrat was in Brussels opening the first meeting of the Parliamentary Partnership Assembly which, depending on your point of view, is either a body to discuss the ongoing UK-EU relationship, or a forum for institutionalised Brit-bashing. Most delegates nodded vigorously at her implied criticism of Boris Johnson. MEPs hmmed and gurgled in support. British Europhiles grinned at one another approvingly. But the real danger to the unity of the West is not the careful removal of some pointless checks on goods moving within the United Kingdom. It is the EU’s determination to treat Britain as a wayward province rather than an ally. There is a categorical difference between what the UK is proposing to do and what … [Read more...] about If the EU is stupid enough to retaliate over the NI Protocol, it will mainly be hurting itself

Ahead of Their Brian Wilson Tribute Album, a Very She & Him Q&A
Photo: Chantal Anderson The words She & Him and Brian Wilson and tribute album just make some kind of inevitable sense, like a Pinterest board zapped by a twee-ray into sentient life. Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward’s indie-pop duo always trafficked in deep-stacked winsome harmonies (hers) and a gentle beach-inflected guitar (his); their three albums of original music all conjured a golden, worn-in AM radio spinning 1960s oldies that never actually existed. Then, for the better part of a decade, the duo turned their throwback knack to compilations, with two Christmas albums (which featured Brian Wilson songs) and one paying grand orchestral tribute to the likes of Burt Bacharach and Carole King. Today, they announced Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson, a dreamy 14-track album of covers, including a track featuring Wilson himself. It’s not without precedent: The duo has covered “ Wouldn’t It Be Nice ” in concert for years, and they teamed up with the 79-year-old … [Read more...] about Ahead of Their Brian Wilson Tribute Album, a Very She & Him Q&A
