The creation of a European army would be a dangerous move and insult the United States, Nigel Farage, former leader of the right-wing populist UK Independence Party (UKIP), told the radio program LBC (Leading Britain's Conversation). Addressing Emmanuel Macron's recent remarks about the necessity of a "real European army", Farage argued that all this echoes comments by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, "who said not too long ago deference to NATO can no longer be used as a convenient alibi to argue against greater European efforts." The EU needs a "real European army" to defend itself against Russia, the French president has said. It also needs to fight populists such as Hungary's Viktor Orban and Italy's Matteo Salvini by becoming less "ultra-liberal", he added. "We will not protect Europeans unless we decide to have a true European army," Emmanuel Macron told the France 1 radio station in an interview in Verdun, a WWI memorial site, in France on Tuesday (6 November). "Faced with a Russia which is at our borders and has shown that it can be a threat ... we need a Europe which defends itself better alone, without just depending on the United States, in a more sovereign manner," he said. "We have been hit by intrusion attempts in cyber-space and multiple interventions in our democracies," he added, referring to Russian election-meddling in the EU. Europe also had to "protect itself" against the rise of China and against US policies that harmed European security, he said. "When I see [US] president [Donald] … [Read more...] about France calls for EU ‘army’ to contain Russia
This weekend’s centenary commemorations of the First World War Armistice serve as a reminder that this conflict was supposed to be “the war to end all wars”, its death toll and futility both so monstrous that nations would never contemplate another. Of course, one hundred years of history has told a very different story. Today the Middle East, with its twin aggressors Iran and Saudi Arabia, is no longer the only unpredictable factor. If the hostile attitude of the presidents of America and Russia towards international peace treaties is added to the mix, global security looks as endangered as ever.Against this backdrop, French president Emmanuel Macron has called for the creation of a “true European army” to defend the EU from China, Russia and even the US. Macron is not suggesting the US is about to declare war against old European allies but, rather, that he believes the existing alliance through Nato cannot be enough to defend Europe when President Trump … [Read more...] about Brexiteers loathe the idea of an EU army, but with Trump and Putin destabilising Nato, is it really such a terrible prospect?
AN ex-MI6 chief has warned over a “Hotel California” defence alliance with Brussels that we will “never leave”. Sir Richard Dearlove is demanding Theresa May rip up plans to keep Britain closely tied to defence projects, including an EU Army. The former spy chief said: “We must cut free from real and present dangers of continuing entanglement and subordination to the EU after Brexit.” A new study reveals Whitehall officials are working with EU counterparts to keep us paying billions into defence projects. The report, by former adviser to the Chief of the Defence Staff Gwythian Prins, says “participation of any kind is structurally prescribed to be integration, not cooperation”. The London School of Economics professor said Britain is heading for ‘a Hotel California relationship’.” MOST READ IN POLITICSMOGG 'NO HYPOCRITE' Jacob Rees-Mogg defends firm investing in Russia while slamming Putin LAB WAY NORWAY Labour may … [Read more...] about Former spy chief says the Prime Minister must keep our troops out of any EU Army
Sputnik spoke with Peter Wilkin, Reader in Communications Media, Political and Cultural Studies at Brunel University for more insights into the issue: Sputnik: What Will Orban's re-election mean for the EU and Hungary? Peter Wilkin: If you take the EU first, little will change between Orban and the EU, he will remain relatively hostile but it will largely remain the same, as Hungary is a well-established member of the bloc. Sputnik: Will the EU further reduce member’s autonomy in the future and implement a joint army? Peter Wilkin: The EU army idea has been around for a long time but been resisted. I think that this would not break free from NATO and although Orban has frequently criticised the EU, there is no suggestion that Hungary wishes to leave NATO or the EU. The views expressed in this article are solely those of Peter Wilkin and do not necessarily reflect the official position of Sputnik … [Read more...] about Potential EU Army Would Not ‘Break Free From NATO’
