The group - composed of Japan, the US, Australia and India - seems to be emerging from the shadows of the Covid-19 pandemic and, to some degree, from Russia's invasion of Ukraine as well. The top leaders are gathering for the fourth time - they have already met once in Washington last September and twice virtually - in less than two years. That underscores the importance of the Quad, which was largely just a concept until 2017. That year, then-US President Donald Trump revived the group in a bid to take on China in its own backyard. Pontins in human rights probe after ‘blacklisting 40 common surnames’ – see list
The equalities watchdog has launched a formal investigation into holiday park firm Pontins over "continued concerns" it is discriminating against Gypsy and Traveller guests. In March last year, the owner of Pontins, Britannia Jinky Jersey Limited, entered into a 12-month legal agreement with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to prevent racial discrimination. It came after a whistleblower revealed it was using an "undesirable guests" list to exclude Gypsies and Travellers and was operating a discriminatory bookings policy. An unnamed Pontins employee blew the whistle last year, prompting an EHRC investigation. Have you had an experience at Pontins you'd like to share? By Robin Levinson-King Published 31 March Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics The Oscars When Will Smith stormed on the stage during Sunday's Oscars ceremony and struck comedian Chris Rock across the face, many were shocked. The joke that ended with a slap was a Rock quip many also found to be in poor taste - touching on a medical issue concerning Jada Pinkett Smith, Will's wife. The actor has since apologised to Rock, saying: "I was out of line and I was wrong." The BBC spoke with several comedians about what it's like when a joke lands really, really badly, and what they make of the Smith-Rock showdown. Ukraine: India ‘feeling the heat’ over neutrality
Soutik Biswas Published 25 March Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war On Monday, US President Joe Biden told a meeting of business leaders in Washington that among the so-called Quad group of nations, India was being "somewhat shaky" in its response to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The US, Japan and Australia - the three other members of this coalition formed to counter China's influence - have been "extremely strong in terms of dealing with Putin's aggression", he said. India, however, has doggedly pursued a non-aligned foreign policy since independence, where, according to the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, "we will stay away from the big blocs…to be friendly to all countries…not join any alliance." But will the war in Ukraine now put India's fabled neutrality under strain? 'Uncharted territory' … [Read more...] about Ukraine: India ‘feeling the heat’ over neutrality

Windfall tax ‘damaging’ for net zero plans and energy security, businesses say
The windfall tax announced by the chancellor will be "damaging" for the UK's net zero plans and energy security, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said. Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief economist, said the tax "sends the wrong signal to the whole sector at the wrong time", pointing to a "backdrop of rising business taxation". Chancellor Rishi Sunak said oil and gas firms will pay a 25% levy on profits , which will be phased out when energy prices return to normal - but companies will get 90% in tax relief for any profits they invest. Japan to resume tourism in June; only packaged tour for now
Japan will open its borders to foreign tourists in June for the first time since imposing tight pandemic travel restrictions about two years ago, but only for package tours for now, the prime minister said Thursday. Beginning June 10, Japan will allow the entry of people on tours with fixed schedules and guides, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. Tourists from areas with low COVID-19 infection rates who have received three vaccine doses will be exempt from testing and quarantine after entry. Japan this week is hosting small experimental package tours from four countries, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. That experiment, which involves only 50 people who received special visas, not tourist visas, is to end May 31. After facing criticism that its strict border controls were xenophobic, Japan began easing its restrictions earlier this year and currently allows entry of up to 10,000 people a day, including Japanese citizens, foreign students … [Read more...] about Japan to resume tourism in June; only packaged tour for now
