John Walker had dreamed for years, visualising the details of the day that he would not just set a world record for the mile, but break the substantial barrier of running it in under three minutes and 50 seconds. It's no surprise that 40 years after he became the first man to do so, he still recalls it vividly. "I do think about that race, and I remember it all," he says. It was in Gothenburg, Sweden, on August 12, 1975, at the end of a long European tour and after training weeks of up to 90 miles at a time that Walker, almost on a whim, decided to aim for the record after winning 19 of his 19 races on the trip. His only regret is he didn't run faster than 3.49.4 that day. Both he and his coach, Arch Jelley, now 89, think Walker could have gone as fast as 3.46, a mark not reached until Steve Cram 11 years later, but for the poor performance of the local pacemaker. (By comparison Roger Bannister, the first man to run a four-minute mile, had three expert local runners to assist … [Read more...] about Walker, runner, world record-holder: Reunited, 40 years after John Walker made running history

Resources: Oil, Fish, and Georges Bank
FOR MORE THAN 350 years, men have been going to Georges Bank, 150 miles out on the continental shelf east of Cape Cod, to fish for cod, haddock, yellowtail flounder, scallops, lobsters. They have decimated stocks more than once, but the fisheries are still there. Back in the early seventies, when catches were unsustainably high, the harvest was, acre-for-acre, the largest in the world. Now other men are heading out to Georges to hunt—through holes inches wide and miles deep—for oil and gas. There won’t be many men at first, perhaps a few hundred aboard a handful of exploratory rigs. But that is enough to signal the fact that along the great submerged thumb stretching from Nantucket Shoals toward Nova Scotia, competition for resources has begun in earnest. The conflict involves two resources in one place, both of importance to the modern world. Oil from Georges would reduce our dependence on foreign supplies, if only slightly. Fish—a resource capable of providing half our minimum … [Read more...] about Resources: Oil, Fish, and Georges Bank

When Wet Leg Met Wet Leg Superfan David Byrne
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos by Jeff Spicer/Getty Image and Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images The ladies in Wet Leg are a shy pair — Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers often speak in hushed tones and regularly giggle at each other’s words, almost as if only the two of them are in on the gag. But today, before this evening’s soundcheck at the Louisiana, an independent venue in Bristol, England, both members of the suddenly famous indie-rock duo are extra quiet. Why? They’re about to meet one of their heroes — albeit over Zoom. “Hello!” beams David Byrne in a welcoming tone from his New York apartment, ready to be acquainted with his favorite new band to talk about life and music. Wet Leg regularly cover one of Byrne’s most famous songs in concert, Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer.” And all three musicians share a knack for infusing their tunes with deft, sly humor. But Byrne and Wet Leg’s paths to global recognition most certainly evolved at a different pace. Whereas Talking … [Read more...] about When Wet Leg Met Wet Leg Superfan David Byrne
