Gilead Sciences Inc.'s $5.1 billion investment in Galapagos NV propelled the Belgian biotechnology company's stock to a record while sending a positive signal to the rest of the sector in Europe, where the industry has lagged the U.S. The amount Gilead is investing tops the $4.7 billion that has flowed to European pharma and biotech companies this year in mergers, acquisitions and share investments. It compares with a whopping $240 billion in the U.S., a number that was boosted by a handful of mega deals, Bloomberg data shows. "I hope it puts the whole European biotech sector in a different light," Onno van de Stolpe, Galapagos's founder and chief executive officer, said in a telephone interview. "It's massive funding." U.S. investors have been more willing to finance early and mid-stage drug development, leading to the creation of biotech centers in Boston, San Francisco and other areas that are unrivaled in Europe. The €3bn State investment in the controversial National Broadband Plan has been labelled “the worst deal ever seen” after it emerged that the private operator chosen to deliver it will only invest €200m equity in it.Opposition leaders and TDs lambasted the Government after it was revealed that Granahan McCourt’s investment will be just one-15th of the State’s, yet the consortium, and not the taxpayer, will own the asset at the end of 25 years. WASHINGTON – Robert Mueller's 448-page investigative report into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election includes 23 unredacted pages of Mueller's written questions and Donald Trump's written responses, the only direct exchange between the special counsel's office and the president. Mueller's team writes that it tried to interview the president for more than a year before Trump submitted written testimony in response to questions on certain Russia-related topics in November 2018. An introductory note included in the report said the special counsel's office found the responses indicative of "the inadequacy of the written format," especially given the office's inability to ask follow-up questions. Citing dozens of answers that Mueller's team considered incomplete, imprecise or unable to be provided because of the president's lack of recollections — for instance, the president gave no response at all to the final set of questions — the … [Read more...] about Full text of Mueller’s questions and Trump’s answers
