Westworld has only been back for a few hours and it's already confusing fans. The second season premiere debuted on HBO and Sky Atlantic with a 70-minute long episode which caught up with the titular park now overrun by conscious hosts following the climax of the season 1 finale which aired a whole 15 months ago. Written by Lisa Joy and Robert Patino, the episode - titled 'Journey into Night' - ended with the reveal of something shocking to key Delos figures, including Head of Operations, Karl Strand (Gustaf Skarsgård): an entire uncharted ocean filled with the corpses of the park's hosts, including Teddy (James Marsden) who is seemingly deceased for the final time. But what happened to them? Enter left: Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), whose host status is thankfully unknown to (most of) his colleagues, who makes the revelatory claim that he's the one responsible for the massacre. Warning: contains spoilers Westworld, while undeniably popular, seems to split its audience. Some felt that season one was all a bit too clever for its own good, what with its multiple timelines, portentous philosophical themes and appropriately maze-like structure. Others thought it was brilliant, and that the intricate, elegant puzzles were an integral part of its appeal. It's not something you could watch while half-asleep – but surely that's no bad thing? Whichever camp you fall into, however, you’ll likely enjoy the explosive season two opener. The park has fallen, the robots are out of control, everyone is panicking – and there’s bloodshed and action aplenty, as well as the usual sprinkling of mystery. If things continue in this vein, we’re in for an intense ride. Look, the credits have changed! They’re as melancholy and eerily compelling as ever, especially when accompanied by that haunting Ramin Djawadi theme music. But instead of the horse … [Read more...] about Westworld, season 2 episode 1, Journey Into Night recap: the twistiest show on TV is back with a vengeance
Back in February, an eagle-eyed Westworld fan decoded a binary sequence hidden in the season 2 trailer which signposted an unlisted website called Delos Destinations, an apparently consumer-facing brochure for Westworld offering reservations. The site appeared to disclose that there are in fact six parks, a big jump from the three expected due to their being three in the original 1973 film. This is now no longer rumour and extrapolation, however, as the season 2 opening episode confirmed it. When the recovery team encountered a dead Bengal tiger on the shores of Westworld, Head of Security Ashley Stubbs said: "We've got Bengals in park six; we've never had a stray cross park borders." Read more Everything we learned about Westworld s2 talking to the cast and crew There we have it: at least six parks. We already knew a second park, an apparently Japanese-themed one filled with samurai, exists, and this little scene helps us narrow down the theme of a third. Bengal tigers are … [Read more...] about Westworld season 2 episode 1 confirms there are six parks, hints at an Indian world
HBO has a lot riding on Westworld, the heir apparent to the soon-to-be-departing Game of Thrones, a show dissimilar from the fantasy epic in terms of subject, but consumed, discussed and obsessed over (they hope) in the same way, its thrill being spectacle, twists, and the viewer's ability to compute and predict these twists. *Spoilers ahead* Tonight saw the arrival of season 2, which opened in complete disarray. The hosts have escaped their narratives and mostly gone on vendettas against the humans that enslaved them, the guests at Ford's soiree being picked off in their tuxedos and ball gowns one by one, cowering behind stagecoaches like frightened NPCs. Bernard was the heart/synthetic organ of the episode, waking on a beach disorientated, his glasses symbolically getting washed away as he tries to come to terms with his life-changing self-discovery. New character Karl Strand (Gustaf Skarsgård) does not help matters, a Delos flunky brought in for crisis management and … [Read more...] about Westworld season 2 episode 1 review: A solid return for HBO’s fun, frustrating show
