Thursday briefing: Now for the only poll that counts
We made it. Election day. The party leaders have given their final pitches, rallied their last rallies, and now here we are. We’ve got the news you need to get started today and you can follow live coverage of events from our indefatigable politics team, who will be working all day and well into the wee hours to bring you all the action – and the results. What’s going on? Well, the campaign is finally over. It’s been a whirlwind six weeks in which the leaders have travelled across the country, stolen phones, hidden in fridges, refused to apologise for their party’s handling of antisemitism when repeatedly asked by Andrew Neil, refused to be interviewed by Andrew Neil at all, posed in boxing rings, posed bulldozing a menacing tower of styrofoam blocks, watched as their confident promise of becoming prime minister quickly became a vanishingly small prospect, or as their pledge to help the Tories by pulling out of seats backfired. Both Boris Johnson and … [Read more...] about Thursday briefing: Now for the only poll that counts
All aboard the Bob Dylan express! How Rolling Thunder revved round America
In May 1975, his marriage breaking up, Bob Dylan spent six weeks in the south of France. His host, an artist named David Oppenheim, had recently provided a painting for the back cover of Blood on the Tracks, an album of seemingly confessional songs that had taken Dylan back to the top of the charts. Critics acclaimed its songs as evidence that, after almost a decade of straying from the straight and narrow, he was prepared once again to bare his soul. But Dylan, as usual, was restless. A year earlier he had toured for the first time since his motorcycle accident in 1966, reuniting with the Band, his old accomplices. It had been a commercially successful but artistically sterile experience. He was looking for something new, and he found it when Oppenheim introduced him to the Camargue, a land of salt marshes, wild horses and a village called Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. There he witnessed the annual gathering of Roma, arriving from across Europe for the spring festival in celebration of … [Read more...] about All aboard the Bob Dylan express! Liberian president works from home due to snakes
Liberian President George Weah was forced to work from home on Thursday after his office was invaded by snakes. Two black snakes were found slithering from a hole in the reception area of the building hosting the presidential office. George Weah: From football star to Liberian president A rising star in football Outside Liberia, George Weah is best-known as a football player. In his heyday, he was considered to be one of the best strikers in the world. Football helped Weah escape a life of hardship. The son of a mechanic, he grew up in a slum in the Liberian capital. The family sank deeper into poverty after his father's early death. Fortunately, Weah was discovered by a Liberian football team. George Weah: From football star to Liberian president From Cameroon to France George Weah was Liberia's top scorer in 1987 and played for Invincible Eleven, the country's leading team at the time. When his club played against the Cameroonian side Tonnerre Yaounde, officials … [Read more...] about Liberian president works from home due to snakes
Farage’s ‘breaking point’ posters were indefensible – but I’m glad we voted leave
This was not supposed to happen, according to almost all the politicians and pundits. Remain was going to win. From the Bank of England to the Church of England, our leaders all seemed to agreed on what the outcome ought to be. But the people did not see it that way. By a clear million-plus majority Britain has voted to leave the European Union. What happens now? Ever since I fell into a conversation with Daniel Hannan over lunch almost a quarter of a century ago, I have campaigned for this moment. I have been prepared to stand for election, change party and stand in a byelection to get us here. Yet I would be the first to point out that a very sizable minority – 48% – did not vote to leave the EU. Our first task has to be to reassure. Yes, we are going to leave the EU. But we need to try to find a new consensus that brings as many of the 48% with us as possible. During the campaign, I listened to plenty of decent, honest remainers, making some sensible points that need to … [Read more...] about Farage’s ‘breaking point’ posters were indefensible – but I’m glad we voted leave
