Raheem Sterling has bought 550 tickets for Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final against Brighton at Wembley on Saturday and donated them to his old school close to the stadium. The 24-year-old winger attended Copland community school, now Ark Elvin academy, when growing up in London and is aware that many of the students come from similar minority ethnic backgrounds to his own. More than 50 languages are spoken at the establishment, which serves the estate in Wembley where Sterling was brought up after coming to England from Jamaica at the age of five. The academy’s principal, Rebecca Curtis, said she felt Sterling was a role model for her pupils. “To know he still thinks about the community he came from despite how his life has changed is really powerful for us,” she said. “The vast majority of our pupils have never been inside Wembley, let alone seen such a big game with one of our old boys playing.” Sterling said: “I have a close connection … [Read more...] about Raheem Sterling buys 550 FA Cup tickets for children at his old school

There has scarcely been a more breakneck reverse ferret than the support now shown by some sections of Her Majesty’s press for Raheem Sterling. You love to see it. Certain papers who cheerily trashed Sterling for so long, for reasons they could never quite put their finger on – but he could – recently seem to have become dimly sentient about the existence of racism. The truly hideous scenes during England’s twice-halted 6-0 win over Bulgaria on Monday apparently marked a coming of age, with various outlets and pundits now turning on Uefa for the sort of inactivity of which they were guilty or supportive of about 10 minutes ago. I am sure Sterling and others will raise a wry eyebrow at the spectacle of some of the same hacks who lacerated him for buying a house or something now pontificating that the England side should actually have walked off in Sofia. They can never get it QUITE right, can they, these players? As for sections of the media – a small … [Read more...] about So: Bulgaria bad, England good? Tammy Abraham says England’s players have resolved to walk off the pitch in their Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia on Monday if they are subjected to racist abuse. The Chelsea striker, who has been called up for his first competitive senior matches for the national side, also revealed that the squad had discussed defying Uefa protocols. The governing body has a three-step procedure that it insists must be followed in the event of racist chants from the stands. The first two steps are an appeal over the PA system for the abuse to stop, after the referee has been notified, and a temporary suspension to the game. If neither works, the official should abandon the match. In Abraham’s opinion, there ought to be only one step. If there is any racist chanting, he feels the players should leave the field straight away – and he said that the England captain, Harry Kane, had led a conversation on that issue at a team meeting on Monday. England face Czech Republic in … [Read more...] about England ready to walk off if Bulgaria fans racially abuse us, says Abraham
Haringey Borough football players have walked off the pitch in an FA Cup qualifier after fans allegedly hurled racist abuse at players. Their fourth round tie against Yeovil Town has already been delayed by 15 minutes after it was claimed on social media that the opponent's fans made racial insults at the home team. It is not yet clear whether this sparked the players to walk off at Coles Park stadium in Tottenham. Coby Rowe of Haringey Borough is restrained by safety staff following an apparent incident of racism involving travelling Yeovil Town supporters and Valery Pajetat of Haringey Borough Pajetat points in the direction of Yeovil Town supporters following an alleged racist incident Douglas Pajetat of Haringey Borough during the Emirates FA Cup match between Haringey Borough and Yeovil Town at Coles Park Stadium in Tottenham on Saturday. “I recently stumbled upon this article about Tony Hibbert signing for an unbeaten Sunday league team in 2017 and missing a penalty for them in a 1-0 defeat on his debut. Which other former professionals have extended their careers into Sunday league football after retiring,” asks George Jones. The smell of liniment oil and the thrill of almost being cut in two by a hungover centre-back would appear to be quite the draw for ex-pros as there have been a few turning out for Sunday teams over the years. “I remember Julio Arca, formerly of Sunderland and Middlesborough, playing for his local team Willow Pond FC in Sunderland for a period after he retired in 2013,” writes Robert Kelly. “He later played for South Shields at a higher standard.” Ali Tabari can go one better. He has a former Premier League player being managed by a former Premier League player in the pock-marked fields of Warwickshire. “My friend until recently played for a team near … [Read more...] about Which former pros have played Sunday league football after retiring?
